Stand and deliver
« on: July 21, 2014, 02:42:00 pm »
I'm thinking about buying a workstation that will raise to standing position so I can alternate my computer time between sitting and standing. I'm thinking about buying one of these (not the girl silly), it's by Varidesk. Does anyone have any experience with a standing workstation...do they help?

I'm imagining one of the benefits is that I'll be sharper when making posts one the autos.ca forum.

Waay back when we had drafting tables, it was kind of a break to work standing up. It was still important to change position and stretch periodically or a person would get back or shoulder pains.
We don't have them anymore because they take up too much space and don't fit in with the rest of the office decor. I miss them though, especially for laying out large drawings.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

That's a very wise decision, you probably can't afford that girl

Seriously though, it makes sense if you have the room and it isn't overly expensive.

When I worked for the Government of Canada as a Student in IT I somehow ended up with a motorized height adjustable desk... I didn't actually use it often since my work involved walking around the building rather than sitting at my desk, but it was very nice to have the option once in a while. Since then I haven't had one but I really like them

I had a motorized desk.  I didn't use the up and down feature all that much after it lost its novelty.  I just stood up when I had to take or make a phone call.

I just get up and walk around. Go to the printer, go to the paper shredder, go to other people's offices for meetings, etc. I do that a lot; that makes me walk around the workplace a lot. I'm not much of a talker and am an introvert. But since I manage people, it's a way for me to stay in touch.

Now that said, there is an island of sorts outside of my office that my boss, another colleague and I share. And there are a couple of bar stools. I do use it often when I want to spread out some paper, and look over them standing up. I have a small meeting table in my office as well, but there's just more space to spread out at the island.

I keep ready how that's the biggest trend right now.  I wish we'd update to something like that.
I can't handle being seating for 8 hours a day.    But like Julie, make a lot of walk around trips.

^^I think the treadmill is a metaphor, not actually part of the system.  ;)

lots of guys here have stand up desks.  Our company is cheap though so they just raise your desk.  So guys have 2 computers at their desk because sometimes they want to sit!

How much are these I like it....

$300?  Not bad, would be great for me at work I'd probably have to buy it myself though.

Thanks for posting this.  I just asked my admin if the company would order me one.  My back is in fits lately and standing is majorly helpful.

Tell them you're going to go off on Comp. because of your back.  They'll have the new desk in tomorrow.  Guaranteed.

Then the insurance investigators will produce pictures of Wing at the track racing  :)

No they will raise mine up instead and probably pay someone $300 to do it.  Then but me another $1000 PC for occasional sit down use and spend hundreds seeing it up with software.  That's what they have been doing until now

Yea, but he races for ~30 minutes, then stands up.  Plus his seat in his car is more ergonomic than his work chair I'm guessing... ;D
