MSRP of $35K USD
Large battery is $9K USD option for 1.6x the range and 0.5s faster 0-60mph.
The resale value on the smaller battery Model S 60 was about $9K lower than the 85 when we bought our CPO (used) S a few years ago.
The original upgrade from 60 to 85 kWh was $20K Canadian.
So, the bigger battery helps resale, and you get about half the cost of that option upgrade back in 4 years, so it's a reasonable option in terms of price effectiveness.
Things like audio you can upgrade later, but getting the biggest battery option in an EV makes a lot of sense as there is no upgrade path except trade-in.
Nissan offered a 24kWh and 30kWh battery option for a short period of time and found everyone wanted the 30kWh option, which became the only option until the new 2018 Leaf offers 40 kWh. I think manufacturers will trend to offer multiple battery sizes during the current phase when battery cost is such a large percentage of the overall vehicle cost. Once battery cells get super cheap, things might change.
