The C is considerably quieter than the Echo and probably a bit quieter than the Fit.

I didn't get a chance to measure RPM at 100km/hr as my top speed was 85km and it was running in electric mode.   Since there isn't a big difference between electric and ICE modes - sometimes hard to tell when the engine comes on, I suspect the C is quiet enough for most people.

What is your Yaris turning at 100km/hr?

To bad Toyota didn't use the same powertrain as the other prius models.

5.4 is certainly good for the Rio (brand new off the lot!!?) but you must have been relying on the computer.   Of course, we are all relying on the cars fuel computer and the only way to get accurate numbers are to go through a couple of tanks and keep a very good record of exactly what is going in.

The gf's Fit is optimistic by close to 8% and I wouldn't have faith in any calculated readings unless the user had spent a long time with the vehicle.

8% btw means 5.4L/100km turns into 5.8 which is nudging into a higher category these days.  In any case, the window of uncertainty is pretty wide unless actual fillups are involved.

Cheers,
John M.

after quite a bit more driving through more congested traffic today, the reading is now at 7.2, which is likely more realistic for a new car...i can probably squeeze that down a little bit, but it might be a few thousand kms before the engine is fully worked in.

Why does the 1.5L engine make so little horsepower?

Why does the 1.5L engine make so little horsepower?
Atkinson cycle engine is made more for efficiency than absolute power.

Thank you John,

The Yaris is turning ~ 3000 rpm at 100 km/h.

We even tried undercoating with Ziebart sound barrier.  It didnt really help.

So I'm glad to see this has been improved.

"The Yaris is turning ~ 3000 rpm at 100 km/h"

Dear roundupready,

I assume you have the automatic.  If this is true, the Yaris should be turning under 2600 at 100km/hr.

MANY people make the mistake of confusing D  and 3.  The difference is about 1cm from one side to the other.

Make absolutely sure the shift lever is shoved over to the D side.  That will drop your rpm 600-700.  I stumbled on this and the ex was renting a car to drive to Ottawa because it felt like she was sitting on top of the engine.  Now she doesn't rent anymore.

Also, have gotten this feedback from friends who have rented and also some posters here.  Definitely a widespread problem.  If you do it wrong the first time, it becomes habit and you never know.

Keep me posted.

I ask this rhetorically but how do people not notice that they have dropped the transmission into 3rd instead of in D? I know someone who did this and I had to repeatedly point it out. It said 3 on the dash, 3 on the shifter... I suppose it didn't yell out "HEY YOU'RE DRIVING IN THIRD!" :)

The D and 3 are side by side not in line.   Amazingly easy to do and as I said, once you do it, you will continue doing it.

Toyota sales people should be pointing this out to new car buyers.

I've never accidently put the Yaris in 3, neither has the wife....

But if you have a manual Yaris you will be revving much higher... as I have noticed.

Author, check your facts. In 2000 VW Lupo set the record of less than 3L/100KM diesel fuel consumption. http://www.dieselnet.com/news/2000/07vw.php
And that was 12 years ago. The model is still available for sale. And is still has the same excellent consumption.

How come CR hasn't noted this "reliability" issue?  ;) ;D

Wing, I agree. But then specify that you are referring to Canadian roads, not any roads. So people would know that they are combustion cars that are more fuel efficient in general.

And they already got the Prius C to 2.7/100km over a 60-90 mile loop without trying hard...(in the USA)
