The Mazda3 uses the same torque converter+clutch setup. No issues at all. I love that transmission.

The other option is what Mazda does by using a conventional automatic, but the lock up torque converter engages above 8 km/h and they have a clutch to shift between gears.  I think it's a brilliant solution to get more fuel economy since with the lock up engaged so quickly, the losses are kept to a minimum.

Also makes for quick, and dare I say even fun, shifts in manual mode. SkyActiv all the gearboxes.

LOL -- on one hand people slam toyota for CVT in a corolla but now say GM should put one in a cruze?  So they can slam them for doing so?

I'm glad you said it, if I did I would be crucified. :'(

I do, too, but it makes a worse whine than a Supercharger...and hell, superchargers at least add to the fun rather than dulling it like a modern day 6-speed auto ;)

I'm glad you said it, if I did I would be crucified. :'(
:( you're sad?  I was ready and waiting!!

:P Just giving you a hard time!

'Cause the 2016 CAFE requirement is 34 mpg.
CAFE should shut the f*ck up and make me a coffee and stay out of my desire for MOAR POWER!  ;)

This

But I wonder if CVT would have been a better idea?

I think a CVT would have been a better idea. At low speeds, DCTs are jerky, the only difference is in degree.

I think in a decidedly "sporty" car, people will put up with the less-smooth DCT.  The Cruze isn't what I'd call a sporty car.  CVT would be better.  IMO.
WTF am I reading here?  Are yous guys actually suggesting that a manufacturer start using CVTs!?!?!?!?!

No. Fricken. WAY!  That made my day.

Want more power? Well, go out and buy a Corvette. People buying a Cruze are looking for a comfortable, reliable and easy to drive car, one that is cheap to run. They tend to live in cities, where 400 hp is wasted.

The car market is incredibly competitive in China and the DCT is most likely a response that.
I'd never join a group that would have me as a member.

I can see it now:

September 1 2015: Chevy announces the launch of the new 7 speed DCT transmission in the Cruze.
November 2015: Chevrolet is issuing a recall  on the 2015 Cruze due to issues with the dual clutch 7 speed transmission slipping into neutral possible causing crashes.

More likely 2020 Chevy annouces a recall after several deaths....really does anyone have any confidence that GM can deploy RELIABLE new technology?
