Massive Hyundai Engine Recall
« on: May 23, 2017, 10:55:48 am »
It looks like it could get worse for Hyundai...

https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/feds-investigate-hyundai-kia-for-1-7m-vehicle-engine-recall/?ftag=CAD13782fc&bhid=21029583661640314920752876379174

There goes my slight interest in their vehicles. Even with their generous warranty, I would not want to deal with a deceiving company.

I'm not so sure that the logic is correct in the CNET article... It was an issue of manufacturing, not the engine design itself... Sometimes it takes a lot of digging to realize how many units are affected...

Innocent until proven guilty.  Everyone just wants a scandal.

And what's the actual problem with the engine?

Yup.

And what's the actual problem with the engine?
Defect in manufacturing left potential for debris that could cause the engine to sieze/stall, if I understand correctly.  Last I read, no examples of the engine failing have occurred.

I like how its worded. Seems to indicate that stalling is a bigger issue than seizing!  :rofl2:

Hmmm there are a few reports of a seized engine out there!

I suspect Hyundai will be required to either replace all these engine or extend warranty to 10y...

In the US they already have a 10 year engine warranty.

I would be fine if it was manufacturing defect that was promptly recalled and warranty extended for 10 years or longer.

If they are found to have tried to cover it up to avoid the recall, that's where I'd find the company not trustworthy to build my family vehicle.

The question is who is making that allegation?  Sounds like the media to me, and perhaps a disgruntled employee who doesn't have full knowledge of particulars but knows who to sell the story to any way.

Defect in manufacturing left potential for debris that could cause the engine to sieze/stall, if I understand correctly.  Last I read, no examples of the engine failing have occurred.

Your understanding of how engines work is what's letting you down here.  You simply can't tell there is a widespread issue of debris in the engine UNTIL THEY FAIL, usually.   For example, any one of your cars could have debris in it right now.  But you have no idea.  Until the debris gets stuck in the oil filter/oil passages (most likely issue) and the engine fails.

GM had a similar issue in the Corvettes.  And they had no idea until several engines failed.  But they rectified the issue immediately.

Now the caveat to this (and why they might be subject of investigation) is that oil changes are being found with large metal debris in them (however, I doubt this.  Ever see how the do an oil change at a dealer?  They just pop the plug and drain it into the large funnel.  Not much investigating is happening during an oil change)..  In which case the dealer would call Hyundai (which is usually the case for stuff like this) and Hyundai did not act quick enough to look into the issue.  OR, if the engines were indeed failing, in which once again the dealers contact Hyundai (often, major failures like engines get called in..both for warranty reasons and for quality reasons) and Hyundai didn't act quick enough to remedy the situation.

And to give you an idea of how small oil passages are, they are usually 4-5mm.  That's small.  But the engine debris could be even smaller...and a number of tiny particles could end up clogging the oil passages.  Debris small enough on their own that you might not even see in an oil change.  But collectively, enough to plug up a passage.

The US government does this routinely to outsiders when it's own industry is faltering.

Fields FIRED, 1400 white collars terminated.   This Hyundai BS is right on cue.

Well there's one way to find out.  Either there are blown engines or there's not.  Should be easy enough to source records to see.

Unlike the whole Toyota UA which they could never repeat, prove, etc.
