I thought I would give a little update on my traumatic adventure with Ford Focus 2012 faulty manual automated transmission.

Let me specifiy I no longer have that horrible car. I bought a Fusion after I had a peculiar incident (that almost turned major) with the Focus.

I was stuck in traffic for nearly 3 hours (those who know Montreal know how horrible it can get ). So the environmental conditions were : heavy rain, extremely very heavy traffic, 5 to 10 km per hour for nearly 3 hours, and a steep slope. After 3 hours, without warning a got a message : Transmission is over heating: stop your car for 6 minutes - I though this ought to be a joke. ( :'( ) Than, instantly the car simply back down on the car behind me - It put itself on neutral right as I was trying to move forward and where the slope is the steepest (almost at the top) - I tried to change lane but it was very difficult with fast driving cars trying to cut traffic to get to the exit (where I was trying to go as well, but with a car that decided it would put itself to "neutral" every minute or so.)

Because I never had a car with an overheating transmission (my automatic transmissions on other cars I had in the past 30 years never ever overheated) I had no clue it would put itself to neutral - I came very close to a major accident (and I got seriously scared). I remained convinced that this car's transmission needs serious investigation - Even though I am no longer concerned, I filed a complain at Industry Canada, for whatever it is worth.

Wow that's terrible. They should go with the standard 6 speed automatic pronto. Or people should just buy the Ford Focus' wonderful 5 speed manual.

The Ford Focus in the Mazda 3 test drive event also had an overheating transmission.

that is some scary stuff... we are giving up so much for this tiny bit of fuel economy or sportiness... can't we just have simple transmissions?

I think Mazda got it right with their Skyactiv transmissions.  Torque converter that works up to 8 km/h and then locks up.  After that, a clutch for shifting between gears.  Probably would work better than a DCT in heavy traffic.

Probably was a condition.  Customer complains about dct, so they exchange it for a vehicle with a more reliable 6 speed transmission.

Does not mean because they missed out on that Focus that they have been doing crap on all their cars ;-)
I've had a Ford Focus for 11 years (ZTS) and never had an issues. This one (starting 2012) however, has a new transmission, the new Dual Clutch Transmission, which caused all kinds of horrible problems (including the overheating). So they offered a Fusion. The Fusion does not have the Dual Clutch Transmission like the Fiesta and the Focus.

I really like the Fusion - way better in many aspect - sound for instance, is way better, more comfort, less noise, Synch is still a pain, but not crucial. Maybe in 2 or 3 years the Focus will be great again. But as it stands now, I would never buy one or recommend it.

I would think that is a given.  A midsize sedan that is more comfortable and less noisy than a compact.  And I agree that Fords DCT has major issues, but the Focus is a good car, if bought with the proper transmission...manual!

The Focus is a dry clutch transmission isn't it? The VW one is wet clutch and certainly mine never had a problem...but the conditoons Zuk described I never encountered.

I don't have a lot of faith in either version.  If I want an manual I'll get a real one and the same with an automatic.
