W204-generation C-Class looks like a reliable used luxury-car buy.

One correction: The C300 model was never dropped, but it did receive a more powerful 248-hp 3.5-litre engine for '13.

It's also important to note that the '12 model received a much nicer interior.

The 2.5L V6 combined with 4matic AWD is a slug.  Have a coworker with a 2008.  Interior definitely feels budget in the earlier years.

On the positive side, the 2011 to 2013's look SO MUCH better than the new design IMO.

Funny, I've driven that model a couple of times 9as a service loaner) and didn't find it too bad. Not a rocket by any means but certainly not "a slug"

Agreed, I actually thought it was alright. The facelifted interior is much better.

I'm looking forward to reading about the AMG version.  They are starting to become affordable on the used market.

Unlike some of the M-cars, AMG versions can be some of the most durable and reliable of the MB models you can buy used.  AMG engines tend to be a little larger in displacement and usually operate at lower RPM and as such don't seem to stress the stuff bolted to it as much.  The AMG-specific parts can be very costly, but since most of the car is a run-of-the-mill C-Class, operating costs aren't that much higher unless you break something like an engine or transmission.

Our C36 was a completely trouble-free car that felt like it was carved from a single block.  I've known quite a few AMG owners, and for the most part, report the same thing.  One glaring exception might be the W203 3.2L supercharged V-6 cars.  They're powerful and fast, but the fairly poor quality of the W203 seemed to creep into the AMG model as well.

Yeah a W204 C63 should be pretty decent used buy if you can find one with all records.

The electronics will be vanilla C-Class stuff so no big deal there.

Our C63 has been very reliable and a ton of fun.  With snow tires, it has no problems in the bad weather either.  Practicality isn't affected over a regular C as the seats still fold down and all the amenities and creature comforts are available.   Issues have been minor - lightbulbs seem to burn out fast (not the HIDs) but the foglights, rear license plate bulbs, etc.  The major expense is obviously fuel - not just premium but the 93 or 94 octane ideally as the engine can get grumpy with 91 octane.  On the highway, you can get down to about 9L per 100kms but in the city, it can get close to 20.  Rear tires will wear out twice as quickly as the fronts and the factory alignment settings are set up for handling so don't expect economy car tire life.

Handling is well above average and it's a superb highway cruiser/GT.  If it were me, I'd add even wider tires and wheels - you can never have too much rubber on the road IMO.  Power is superb - no matter how steep the hill, this car will take it with ease without feeling stressed.  The noise the car makes is also really nice - you will scare people starting the car up and the rev-matched downshifts will get you lots of wonderful braps and gurgles.  The automatic was changed to the Speedshift 7 speed in 2012 (along with the revised interior).  Brakes are phenomenal and scrub speed easily though you do get a fair amount of brake dust.

The engines are notoriously understressed as well - when you have the SLS Black with essentially the same engine producing 600+ hp,  you know MB is leaving a lot on the table with this engine.  A simple ECU flash for about $1500 dollars can net you an easy 70 hp and 70 lb/ft of torque.

The C63 is also the FIA Medical Car. This article, written by Dr. Hartstein, implies that the car is actually a 2008 first year model and its still in use - impressive reliability considering how hard it gets driven around the track en route to a crash.
