Not A Review: 2014 Mazda 6
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:44:36 am »
Hey guys,

I just had a Mazda 6 dropped off for a week. Since I am not doing a review on the car, I figured I could at least take some questions if anyone has any.

So, Best & Brightest, let's see what you've got!

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

HAH. It is a nice baby blue, just for you!

Do you like it?

I drove the GT before this one arrived. Honestly, I like it more than any other midsizer in the field. That's from a completely biased view without giving it a proper test yet.

How is the calibration of the electric steering?

The best thing about the older Mazda's is their hydraulic steering was damned near perfect.  I have been less impressed with their electrically assisted steering and keep hoping they will sort it out as they gain experience.

Have they succeeded?

This one is going to be a bugger for me to figure out, unfortunately. The Mazda 6 showed up riding on Blizzaks. So, it is going to be a little off anyway.

Yesterday, I did take it down a windy bit of road and the steering feel was quite confidence inspiring, though a little light.

I don't think you can compare this car to the previous 6. The Mazdaspeed6 was such an epic car. Almost bought one and someone took it out from under my nose. THAT had great steering. The new 6 I would say is 80% there...and only because of the weighting.

A little update on steering: I just did a back road drive through some twisties and then a highway cruise home. The steering has a bit of a dead zone. DO NOT LIKE.

So who are these 'best and brightest' you refer to?   :rofl2:

My question is how does it stack up in overall quality feel compared to others in the segment like Accord, Fusion, etc.

Net impression on the road...same...better...worse...can't tell? Seat-of-the pants impression...

Come on, imagine you're lying in a ditch about to die and you could write just one more auto-journalist sentence that you would be remembered for...WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ABOUT THE MAZDA 6?

Please excuse my ignorance at this point. I haven't been in either the Accord or Fusion, yet. Last year I drove zero press cars. So, I am playing a little catch up. I did, however, drop into a Ford dealer last night to peek inside a Fusion.

Verdict: I'd have the Mazda interior. It just seems more lux to me (from a looks standpoint). Fit and finish - the jury is still out on that comparison until I hop into the other offerings.

I did take it out yesterday evening and give it a good flog on some pristine and not-so-pristine paved back roads. Considering it has winter tires, I still had a ton of fun. The seats are a bit stiff for my liking (noticed that in the CX-5 as well) but that's more of a personal taste thing. The seat bottoms are made for 400lb oxygen suckers -- absolutely massive. I wish the seats had A LITTLE more bolster but most people won't be driving as hard as I was. Other than that, I had a lot of fun behind the wheel, as I usually do with all Mazdas.

On the highway, I was kind of disappointed. That steering dead zone made it hard to keep it in a straight line if you were adjusting the radio or something else. That bugs me. It really needs to be tightened up in that regard.

Were those pictures taken with an iPod?  Good thing we already have pictures of the Mazda6 from other test drives.  Hopefully the steering is something that can be fixed with an update or refresh down the road.  I honestly don't know if I would notice they steering issue, maybe because I had the first gen Mazda6, and it had great steering.  I don't think a lot about  the steering in the Mazda5, as I in a van with kids in the back, and take corners differently.  It doesn't wonder on the highway...

How is the "skyactiv" automatic?  Feel any different than a regular 6 speed auto?

I just took a few shots with my phone while I was out for a cruise. If I am not doing a proper review of a car, there is no point in taking the DSLR out. I'm a horrible photographer.

As for the auto, it just always felt like it was in the right gear. No hesitation and when you tramped on the accelerator, it did a SMOOTH downshift; the transmission didn't slam into the lower gear.

That said, this car has "paddles" on the steering wheel for shifting. The shifts from the paddles are a bit slow, but they are predictable, which is incredible important. You can time them spot on, every time.
