Selling a BC car to an Ontario resident
« on: March 21, 2017, 01:11:18 am »
Hi,

I read through this old thread about buying a BC car and driving it to Ontario and have questions about this: https://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?topic=31987.0

I'm the seller in this case and am selling my BC car to an Ontario resident. He's going to pay me in advance and have me send the paperwork (transfer form and vehicle registration) to him so he can get a 10 day permit to bring the car back. The local insurance guy says this can't be done but I see nothing saying that - it's just unconventional.

My questions:
1) Does he pay PST/HST in Ontario or BC?
2) What forms do I have to subsequently submit back to ICBC and when do I submit it?
3) What forms does he need to bring with him from Ontario to BC and does he have to submit anything in BC?

thanks,

He will pay tax in ontario when he registers it.

Not sure why you need to submit anything to icbc

He would bring insurance from Ontario I assume.  No forms really...

The only question is can a non resident get a trip permit?  Or will the trip permit have to be under your name then he registers the car in ontario?

Ideally he registers it, in ontario then gets a trip permit in ontario and brings that with him to BC.

The problem is our system is so stupid, without an etest you can't get a trip permit.  It's so so dumb.

Unless he is doing this for fun, shipping is cheaper and easier than driving it back btw.

Thanks, starting to make sense now. Effectively I'm selling him the car in Ontario even though the car is BC registered - I've been thinking about it wrong (that it's a BC sale). Basically ICBC has no involvement beyond me cancelling the insurance.

Final question: Should I be using the ICBC transfer form or will the buyer fill out his own - if he does then don't I have to fill it out and sign it first?

All he needs in Ontario is a bill of sale and a copy of the ownership papers.

I believe Kathleen Wynne will asses the BC seller an polluter transfer tax to help pay for the subsidized hydro.
