Avis hasn't gone wrong for me in Canada, US, Germany, and France.

Budget is owned by Avis; I suspect its where Avis offloads its higher-mileage vehicles.

Avis and Enterprise have been good to me over the years.

Holy fack,  February rentals in Phoenix are expensive.  I'm looking at least $800 CDN for 12 days.

Had to rent two cars this week.
A Mitsubishi Lancer $hitbox, which was displaying "Service Past Due" and a Jeep Grand Cherokee showing "0% Oil Life Remaining".
The Jeep had 18,000 miles on it.  Wonder if it has ever had its oil changed.

Reason enough to never buy an ex-rental car.

Maybe oil was changed but the oil life meter was not reset? But I agree with you, not very reassuring.

Well then...time to buy something down there, don't ya think?  Get it on the cheap and just abandon it somewhere...or spend a little more for something nicer and find a place to park it so it's there the next time you show up.

Not sure how insurance works, or registration - if you even can - but what about an old Popo car?
https://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/cto/d/2009-crown-vic-p71/6317202206.html - only $500 for this 2009 model.  Shoot, even the cops might leave you alone.

Or a nice sporty car, surely you can talk him down.
https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/d/holy-grail-of-fieros/6292194388.html
Even comes with a drip tray  ;D

Perhaps a pickup is more your style?
https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/d/1996-ford-f150/6317162637.html
$600, 4.9l and a 5 spd manual.  Looks pretty rust free too.  Drive it home and sell it for a profit.

Or maybe a nice $500 Merc...never mind the not running part, it'll give you something to do while you're down there.  You just go for fun, right?

So many options, why rent when you can buy!  ;D

In Edmonton for a few days, rented a Jeep Compass Trail Hawk, it's OK,  but the auto start stop is terrible, very rough and can't make up its mind , came to one red light and in the length of the light it turned off then on then off and then on, it's very rough when it does this , finally found the button to disable it  ;D

just got back from the UK after renting a 2017 Skoda Rapid Spaceback from Hertz for 28 days.  I put on 2436 miles during my adventure, picking it up at Gatwick and dropping it off in Manchester.
I think it had a 1.4L gas engine and a 7 speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) with idle stop and go (annoying till I found the off button).
location:  Prince Edward County, Ontario

They'll get cheaper as the time gets closer. Last Feb I got a Mustang convertible at the airport for 6 days for $191.

I have a Ford Fiesta 1.0 petrol as my rental on my business trip in Germany the next few days- it's all they had left. In this low-power tune, it's really just too slow: 80PS with 48k on the clock, although in typical German fashion, the vehicle is in immaculate shape aside from the smell of cigarettes.

My wife works at a rental company doing insurance claims and they are all over any signs of smoking in the car here. They'll charge the renter for deodorization, lost rental income, etc. Is is different in Europe? Or at least Germany?

Most cars I've driven in Europe have a residual smoker smell even though there are placards and clearly-stated lines in the agreement for no smoking. Smoke gets in peoples clothes, breath, etc... so you could have a smoker who rented a car, didn't actually smoke inside the vehicle, but still carried the residual smell into the vehicle. I'm just used to it. Keep in mind, DE is a country where they still have vending machines for cigarettes.

Heaven forbid you make a 3cm scratch on the car in Germany though, they catch everything on cosmetic damage. Even stuff I don't see.

rented a new Corolla for my drive down to MEL. It was...a sad car. It got about 7L/100km only driving highway...my 280hp Saab from 2007 does that, and it had a tiny tank. It also had no power at all for passing. At least it had cruise.

On the return Thrifty had no spots to park, despite the fact that I returned it exactly when I said I would ... so I left it double parked right outside their door at the airport in front of a cop and tossed them the keys.

Never again for the company and the car.
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.
