Update:  Drove the car from Regina to Winnipeg last night.  Smooth as silk.  No problems.
good to hear...as mentioned earlier, as "boring" as those cars may be, they aren't really known to be troublesome...take care of it, and you'll have plenty more years of service from it.

 :iagree:
But it is more fun to talk him into a new/ used car  ;D

Oh that's coming regardless of whether the Golf lasts 5 months or 5 years!

I called the mechanic in Winnipeg.  He spoke directly with the mechanic in Regina.  Winnipeg guy calls me back and is going to pay for the labour in the Regina shop, AND also going to pay for my wife's rental that we got so she could get back to work on Monday.  Top guy.  Top customer service.

He was very apologetic.  I said not a lot of businesses would make things right like this (pay for the labour sure, but paying for the rental was unexpected).  Told him he has our business for the foreseeable future, and that we'd spread the word.  Kirby at Kirbside Auto in Winnipeg.  [emoji106]

It was the right thing to do, but most businesses are so shortsighted nowadays.  This was refreshing to experience.
Wow! Top notch guy!

Personally, I'd drop by his place with a pizza and a box of beer just to say thanks for going out of his way to save you a few hundred bucks.

Did this last evening.  Took a 12-pack of beer as I wouldn't have got to him before he closed if I had stopped for pizza.

He was again apologetic for the bolt issue, but super appreciative for the beer.  Said he and his guys would definitely enjoy them.  Cut me a cheque for the 4-day car rental, and then I hung around and we chatted for about 30 mins.  General car stuff and my ongoing car hunt.  Top guy!

Just passed 140,000 kms on the Golf, and I'm pleased to report that there haven't been any major issues since the bolt issue in August.  We've mostly kept the car to city driving, and the farthest we went has been to Falcon Lake about 2 hours east of town.  Had a scheduled maintenance in October and the mechanic recommended changing the serpentine belt, and noticed the brake pedal switch was done.  Total all in was about $300.  If we have to spend $300 on this car for maintenance every 5 months, we'll be thrilled.

The car has gotten noticeably loud in the last few months, which we mentioned to him in October.  He mentioned that maybe the baffling was getting compromised and that we'd have to keep an eye on it going forward.

Seeing that it has been in good shape the last few months, we are thinking of keeping it as a 2nd car to give us extra flexibility once baby comes along.  Also, it is quite cheap to run.

Mrs. Burger was of the opinion that we could just use the Golf for the first year after baby is here.  I vetoed that idea.  I barely fit in it as it is.  I can't imagine struggling with a car seat in it!

Or, if you want to keep it in the VW Family.

As long as you don't have to sit in the passenger seat, a rear facing seat should be fine in the Golf.  We managed without issue in a Protege5 with a rear facing seat.  But I am 5'10 and have stubby legs.

I hate to be that guy but it was called City Golf and City Jetta, not Golf City and Jetta City...

Glad it's worked out for you though. 95% of the time, repairs make sense. Where it makes sense to go to a different car is if the car no longer works for you anyway, as it was with us and our Odyssey.

Perfect car for your growing family:  (seriously, when I was a kid, my parents had the 1960's version of this car...)

Not really my car, so not really committed to getting the name exactly right.  Unless it is a GTI, R or a wagon, they are all Golfs to me  ;D.....and you ARE that guy!  ;D
