In don't know about the 128 idea. It will look really dated in a few years with he earlier models falling into the hands of these so called flat brimmed hats as values fall. It doesn't sound like much of an upgrade, especially if you plan on holding it for a while. If you like this set up wait a few years and get a new one.

Except there will very likely never be a "new one." If by "new one," you mean a compact BMW that isn't obscenely heavy, has hydraulic steering, and a sweet naturally aspirated inline 6.

I don't know about 1TSX, but the 128i is the last BMW I have any desire to own. I keep looking for a nice used one too, but will likely never pull the trigger because two-door coupe just isn't practical enough for me as a daily driver. But if it works for others, I'm 100% for it!

Yes there will always be a new one, but what I meant by this comment is that buying for example the 228 will Maximize the amount of years of driving the "newest car" since the body style won't change meaningfully for years to come.

There is something to be said for that especially for people who keep their cars for a long time.
I love it when a plan comes together.

^ I guess I don't always agree that the newer car is the better car. I had a '99 Civic SiR that I bought new and drove happily for eleven years. Honda kept dumbing down the Civic with each new generation, so IMO, the older car (mine) was always the most desirable one to have. Unfortunately, I see BMW going the same way.

Yep.  If you find a nicely maintained car and it's a car that has aged well in terms of styling, performance, reliability....nothing wrong with going older used.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I've noticed some pretty cherry 08/09 128 and 135's for sale with well under 100K for $16-18K asking, even around here in uber-expensive Alberta.  That seems like a pretty sweet spot for one - no warranty, but these cars seem to be pretty durable - and there seem to be a decent number of 6MT ones out there.  That would be pretty nice.  I've driven the 135i and REALLY liked it - the chassis is "old school" BMW - feels so light and tossable with great front axle grip - you can really put the car where you want.

To me, that's the crazy-scary part.

Plus they're kinda ugly looking.  Proportions seem off. YMMV.

If I got one for the right price, I'd easily live without the warranty, knowing going in that it's a BMW.  It's RWD, 6MT, no "M" parts that are scary expensive.  Of course, logic would win me over personally and I'd find a Lexus I liked...

That said, I do like the 1-series.

The turbo drivetrain and components is frighteningly expensive.

I think this is the right way to go if you want a 1'er. Especially a 128. 2008/9 vs 2011 is moot IMO, the car is pretty much the same. You're going to have to fix some stuff either way so you might as well save the $7-8k up front.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

A list of all manual 1 series for sale in Ontario:

http://wwwa.autotrader.ca/cars/bmw/1%20series/on/?prx=-2&prv=Ontario&loc=Ottawa%2c+ON&trans=Manual&sts=New-Used&hprc=True&wcp=True&rcs=15

Anyways, I like the 1 series. Its one of the last "old school" BMWs - I6, 6MT, RWD. Styling is personal taste.

I'm still on the lookout for GTIs as well, but they are two different vehicles.

LSDs are available as dealer installed options on a few models. Not sure how much they are though.

I've got rid of a vehicle on leasebusters (very positive experience) but never took over one.  But that's what I'm currently looking for now......someone that has put down a decent downpayment and is now looking to get out of it.  I thought I had the perfect lease takeover last week until the clown decided not to deal with someone out of Province.

Yes, and it was a very easy process. It cost me nothing as the seller paid for all the transfer fees.
