Congratulations!  Having been through it not too long ago myself, I can relate to the stress of it all.

Thank you everyone! Certainly exciting times ahead, we'll be able to get that ideal place for us. It's still too bad it won't be in Kelowna but we're excited about our new adventures in Edmonton. Plus my wife has family there and I have childhood friends there so all is well.

Looking back over a year ago...

Just bought this 1100 sq ft 3 bedroom 1.5 bath townhome for $220,000. It's older but it'll do as we save up for something better 3-5 years from now.

Late update because of so much back and forth yesterday and I was battling a bad headache, but last night, 4 days later, we have an accepted offer. I was determined not to accept below asking after a strong flurry of activity, but she didn't lowball, the realtors offered an olive branch by reducing commissions to make up the difference between my counter offer and her counter offer to my counter offer, and I appreciated the quick respectful transaction, so we took it. I'll give the full details after the subjects are removed but I will comment that my wife and I are very happy with the final number.

Congrats DKaz. Selling and dealing with multiple offers can be a headache on its own. Now onto packing and moving. Just remember to purge before packing.

Congrats DKaz, we are at the point.  The purging was mostly done for the staging.  The packing & moving is next.  Mostly in May.

Thanks! Congrats to you too, Solstice2006. Yea a lot of purging happened at staging but there will definitely be more. I have this figure to think of: up to $3 per cubic foot. That's how much it's going to cost to move stuff and have it stored for 2-4 months before we take possession of our new place. Our couches take up close to 100 cu ft of room so are they worth $300 for us when we bought them for $220? Not really. They are nice couches and were a bargain for us to buy, but not $300 to move nice. I'm sure we'll find good couches for a bargain in Edmonton.

Anyway, I'm deciding between Big Steel Box and U-Haul's U-Box for moving. U-Box costs less and is the most flexible. I can also start renting one U-Box next month to start packing stuff away -- I have a storage unit already which I'll put one month's notice on so technically it's no extra cost.

I am having PODS delivered to the house.  2nd week of May.  Load the first POD slowly that week.  They pick up, store it.  3rd week of May, deliver 2nd POD.  Load that over the next 4 days.  They pick it up, store it.  Stay at inlaws for 1 week.  Have them delivered, 1 day apart, end of May.  Just over $800.

Not bad. Not a terribly long distance move? (Sorry I'm selfish and haven't kept up to date).

Four U-Boxes for me with up to 3 months of storage will be $2383.60 plus tax or $2.32 per cubic foot. Going down to three U-Boxes will cost $1871.70. So the drive to minimize is there if we just don't need it or it can be affordably replaced once we settle in.

I also have about 4000L (128 cu ft) in my van for essentials we need between homes.

Moving from Burlington to Ancaster (west of Burlington), 22km away.  Staying at the in-laws for 1 week in Oakville, 20 km away (East of Burlington)

Not bad, works out. Have you considered trailering the boxes yourself to save some money or too much trouble?

Don't follow. Using a trailer to bring boxes to the new house?  Or trailering the PODS myself somehow?

Yea the PODS, not sure if they have a trailer for that purpose. U-Haul has it apparently which I'll take advantage of to at least transport the U-Boxes between from Kelowna U-Haul to home and back. U-Haul handles transport from Kelowna to Edmonton. I could also access the U-Box from the U-Haul location it's in.

No there is no option for me to do it.  They are quite big.  Like 20' long, 8' height, 8' wide.  Besides, April and May is the busiest months for my business.

Secured the new place in BC, owners willing to hold till August (thank goodness as the r/e market in the Okanagan is white hot right now) So now we list and sell our place here in Alberta. Hope it moves as our market is pretty saturated right now.

This is stressful......

I have no idea if this is feasible or not for you but a friend did this when moving and having to store house contents for months.

He bought a whole enclosed transport trailer for $3k, as in a commercial 48' or so unit.   Loaded it up,  had it moved it and parked it until his new house was ready, which he was building, emptied it and sold it for $3k.

There are people around here that rent shipping containers (sea cans), for that purpose.  They're usually ones that are no longer acceptable for international trade, so they use them for short term storage, they can deliver them on a tilt deck flatbed.

My diesel car self-identifies as an electric vehicle.
