This time of year, the only bike I'm really fantasizing about riding is my own.  C'mon Spring!!!

I agree!!
To some people, Dec. 21st is the first day of winter.  To me, it's when the days start getting longer.
But, the Wing still has about two more months of hibernation. :(

Choosing a car based on reliability is like choosing a wife based solely because she is punctual. There is more to it than that...

^^Nice one, Bob!!

That reminds me of a custom bike builder.  His specialty is street legal flat track-style bikes.  Beautiful...every one of them!

^^Of course I have, Bob.  I'm even lucky enough (and old?) to have seen the bike race in person twice, I think!  I can't for the life of me remember who was piloting it though.  But it was at Daytona in the early 1990s.

There is a good documentary called One Man's Dream or something similar.

I have been doing a lot of research into building a cafe racer based on a Suzuki GS engine.

trudging howling along at 8000 rpm at 160 mph for 20 miles straight (literally).

Not as fun as the mountains, but...

Oh how I love those cafe racers.  For a very brief time I owned a cb550-4.  Four into one pipes.  Clip on bars.  I bought it new, during my single days and had the dealer install the clip ons.  A few months later, I gave this girl her first ride on a motorcycle.  Big mistake!  A few months after that I sold the 550, needing the money for a wedding and downpayment on a house.
It is hard to beat those cafe racers for looks and memories.

Yeah, sometime I'd like to build one based on a GS1100 engine.  Those Suzy engines make good power, have a superb delivery, and last forever.  A <400lb bike with 130hp is great fun.

Those engines are still the basis for most pro stock drag bikes...

That 1100 engine is one of the strongest bottom ends to be installed in a stock bike.  Unmodded, with a little care, they will last literally forever.  Even with a lot of mods, the bottom end will hold a LOT of power.  The early stock engines put 100hp out, and a free breathing engine with cams and top end work can get close to 130 very reliable horsies.

Bolt it into a lightweight, but stiff, chassis and while it won't run with the 200hp+ crowd, it would be a VERY fun bike to own.

1000cc sportbikes are pushing $2k a year with the maximum no-claims discount at SGI. 600cc aren't much cheaper to insure.

I still like the look of these lumps:

Customized VMax http://youtu.be/nxsy_OInwcY?t=3m55s - what a sound.  Too bad there's not more of it.

Roland Sands makes some interesting stuff!!  I met him when he was a 250cc class racer in AMA.  We both had the same race bike, so I chatted him up.  Great guy.  I had no idea back then he'd turn into a motorcycle customizer.

Great guy!

There's really only one bike I've been obsessing about, today and everyday.  It's in the garage sleeping and you should see it in about 3 or 4 weeks.
