You have $8000 to spend on a bike...
« on: May 22, 2023, 09:39:58 am »
So here are some options to go along with the poll.
Said 1997 Valkyrie

A couple of FJ09's
A 2017 with low low km but it's been dropped.

Or a 2016 with more km but clean.

One or two of the aforementioned VTX's...
2008 VTX 1300 - these are still carb'd - and shaft drive so maintenance is easy for a mechanical wizard like me... :P

Or a bigger badder 2002 1800...albeit a lot more km on it.  At least it's EFI so it's probably better on fuel than the smaller one.  Maybe.
Shi# pics but what ya gonna do.  Sucker's got enough speakers to blast your ears out at top speed.  Too.  I thought the whole point of riding was to get away from "the noise"...

Aforementioned Kawasaki Vulcans...under budget at an asking of $7250 for this 2005 1500 monster.
A 1500 example.

Or a smaller 900 CC variant that's 9 years newer and less money.  Inevitably better on fuel too.

A friend has a VTX1300, and another has a Vulcan 900...and he's just as "fast" as the 1300.  No mountains here so...extra torque doesn't show itself so much.  I guess.

This 1700 is just over budget, but I think it could be had for or under.  Maybe.
Looks good and clean too.

Wife vetoed anything red...which is too bad, this one looks pretty good and well under budget...

On to the Yamaha...not many samples - huh...
This one looks alright, but might be a little high on the $ for the km.
2007 V-Star 1300
With

Without

And who knows what the good bads and pros and cons are...

Valkyrie is a 6 carb'd Goldwing without the wings...sounds cool...might actually have some staying power on its price point later down the road.  Likely worse on gas than my Fusion.

FJ's - great reviews all around it seems.  Cheap to insure, ish, mo-powah!, more upright riding position might be better for my knees and back, looks like more fun than a Harley wanna be bagger...it's not a Harley wannabe.  Cons: won't hold it's value...asking prices seem high considering they were only $11,299 new when they were new.  $350 or so to add the side panniers and what, another $2-300 for the top box?  Unless you got the soft cases.  I would think those would be even less.  Why no cruise control Yamaha??  Then again none of the others have it either.

Friend of a friend says the Yami 1300's like to eat starter motors.  Big job...but if you start them right...whatever that means.

The Vulcans...they gotta be ok right?  If I could convince my wife a Ninja 1000 would be good...it's a Sport Tourer... ;D Or there's a VFR800 available right now too.  Always wanted one of those, even if it's not the fastest thing out there.  Neither are any of these.  Just like the looks of that bike.

For some reason, Suzuki just isn't on my radar...feels like it's the Lada of the bike world...or a step above, but below the other 3 so not worth looking at.  So...no options there.

You're looking for a highway cruiser?  Valkirie is nice, unique engine but not sure I would go carb. Though  choice. Fj09 would be nice.  Also maybe a honda st1300, vfr1200 ,  yamaha warrior... so many choices

I'd take the Valkyrie over any of the V-twins just for the engine.

The Valkyrie is pretty cool. Not much appeal for the Vulcan for me. They seem to go cheap on the used market.

The Triumph Rocket III is cool but likely outside the budget range for a really nice one. Here is one that is close. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-street-cruisers-choppers/red-deer/triumph-rocket-3-classic-motorcycle/1659839232

A Suzuki Boulevard M90 is funky. https://www.kijiji.ca/v-street-cruisers-choppers/edmonton/suzuki-m90/1659838202

I assume you want a cruiser? Looking to ride 2 up? The FJ is not really like the others. Out of that group I would take the Valkyrie. Actually I would go buy a new DR650SE so perhaps I am the wrong guy to ask.

The Valkyrie has one big thing going for it...and that's if I all of a sudden can't ride because knees or back or some other shi# reason, my son would probably buy it off me and I wouldn't lose money.  All the other bikes are more than likely a net sum loss.  Never mind I still have to buy a helmet, jacket, gloves, proper riding footwear...maybe a pair of those kevlar jeans...

I'm OK with the FJ not being a two up bike...rather ride alone no?

KTM - the DR650 isn't a bad idea...more of a damn I wish I lived in BC or AB where there's better places to take that kind of bike.

Oh, and the Wife said NO VMax's...sport bikes...red bikes...Harleys (because of the riders attitudes)...so it kinda only leaves fat old man bikes (yay for me! 'cause I am...mostly...sniff) or something FJish.
I'd LOVE a VFR1200...but they're - checks...holy crap!  :o $1755 vs under $1000 for any of the one's above.  A 1700 CC VMax is only $879,  Someone must hate VFRs!!

I know squat about cruisers, or anything more than about 3 years old for that matter  :rofl2: so not in a position to advise. Hope you find something you really like!

What about something Bonneville-ish?

Of all those I like the Valkyrie, something special about that design. And the center of gravity is super low from what I remember of riding a Gold Wing, making a big bike feel like a small one (at least until it tips over). The age is the only thing I guess

I haven't even gone to look at any or call any of those guys yet...timing...worrying my knees or back would be shi#...so I found this the other day...and (we) went to pick it up this AM.  My son bought it.

Yup...that's right. A Honda CBX1000 6 cyl.  It's missing the windshield...and that's about it.  Needs one new tali light bulb and when the guy before this guy had it he got two right side covers painted (oops grabbed the wrong pair) so the left side cover needs to be painted still.

The guy my son bought this one off of also has a CBX1000 Supersport...that thing looked mint.  Even nicer than this one, but this one comes with the air shock and a "better" suspension.

So now there's def no room in m...MY garage for MY things lol.

Wow. That is awesome. Are those still bikes that people ride a lot or are they mostly collector bikes these days?

I would go with an FJ type of bike simply because I like the rider position better than the cruiser types. Happy hunting!!
Lighten up Francis.....

So you don't need to buy a bike now, you just need to borrow that awesomeness that is a CBX  ;D

Partial to Hondas, so Valkyrie for me too (but I have zero bike experience). The CBX is uber-cool. If I had the guts to get a bike, I would probably get a minty Honda CB750 - they were just so right.

So, he took it for its first ride this weekend. It's damn near 30 at 10-11AM...he comes back after 15 minutes..."I need a shower!"  Apparently that big air cooled 6 gives off a LOT of heat, and he's not a "shorts T-shirt and sandals kinda rider.  Has his kevlar pants on, jacket, helmet, gloves...so he was very warm.  ;D

He had gone through all the emotions since Thursday...because he didn't get to take it for a test run.  Basically bought it on faith.  Battery didn't seem to hold a charge...seems OK now...a little bit of "did I just fukup?" buyers remorse...little things you catch after the fact like the clutch seems to be sticking...then he got it running...it went in to gear fine...and off he went...and sweat be damned...BIG smile on his face.  Facking LOVEs it.

Hope this works.
