Cars for tall people
« on: January 03, 2020, 02:36:48 pm »
Hello! Hoping for some advice. My son is 6'3" with long legs and we are looking for a used car that he can drive without his knees touching the steering wheel and that will allow someone to still have room to sit behind him. Looking to spend 7-9K, manual if possible, and semi-cool, as he is a teenager. Any suggestions on what he would fit into? Thanks.

Hmmmm, a Cayenne actually fits the bill.

You can even get a manual tranny.

That’s magic! I am 5’9 and it already feels tight in there.

Anyways, back on topic - you should try a Prius or Cmax.

Does not fit into your price range, nor manual but as almost 6'2" myself, no problem to fit in behind the wheel of my Volt (either 1st or 2nd gen) but not much room to sit behind...

What about a 6'5" guy as seen on YT: https://youtu.be/SD-RIcpO8Do?t=1047

Long legs is the key here...the Volt is also tight.

Pfft!  Screw that semi-cool BS.  If mamma bear (and/or papa bear?) are providing the car, you make the choice, not him.

My 2 cents - Chevy Sonic (can be semi-cool if you can get one with the 17" wheels).  Seat moves back and up or down and there's plenty of leg room for someone "only" 6'3".  Rear seat won't be fun for anyone behind him but so what.  They can take their own car. Or sit on the right side.  My kid is 6'2" and he sits closer to the steering wheel than I do (at 6') in it.  I know a bigger guy - 6'+ and not small, and he bought a Sonic because it felt better than a Cruze - more head room, felt bigger, despite its seemingly diminutive dimensions.

Just get the 1.8l and not the turbo 1.4 - though that does negate the cooler 17" wheels.  Not much can go wrong with one of those.

Ford Focus, non-RS, with stick, or VW Golf.

Craziest headroom I saw in a regular car was the 2020 Prius, but not a young dude car in any way.

A Prius is a chick magnet since so many ladies are into saving the environment
Our granddaughter in college, drives a Prius when she home from school , says the Prius is total acceptable for young people to drive
She also likes it cheap to fill up

I'm 6"3', 30 inch inseam and I drive a Suzuki SX4 no problem, if you can find one. I have a taller friend and he has no problem with the SX4, either.

Suzuki is no longer operating in Canada, but depending on where you are, servicing may not be a problem. I'm in Quebec and have never had any problems.

I also have driven comfortably the Toyota Matrix (Pontiac Vibe is the twin, which I haven't driven) and the VW Golf.

All those are very solid cars.

I've driven the Chevrolet Aveo, which is very 'big' inside. (Suzuki Swift is the Aveo twin, IIRC.)

Nothing really 'cool' though :)

He could try the Fit without moonroof (which kills the headroom), but avoid the first generation. I test drove one over a weekend when they first came out (a rental) and it was painful.

Check the local car rental places to see what cars you can rent for a day to see which ones your son is comfortable driving in.

I seem to fit in the Mazda2/now new Yaris.

Holy ghost batman!

okay, not a great time for a bat joke

I'm 6'4 and I love the unique profile and utility of matrix/vibe.

2.4 with the 5AT is surprisingly peppy and made me forgot about my gas mileage issues.

highly recommended  :rofl2:

I'm 6'2 with long legs so I think about this a lot.

2 suggestions, though I admit neither is particularly 'cool'

A bit out of left field, but Volvo's are great cars for tall people. Find a decent mid-2000's FWD (less maintenance than awd and still good in winter) s60 or S80 (not a 'cool car' though, i admit) for $5k or less.

Another option: Korean cars, as Koreans can be quite tall. One thing I really like in a car is seats with extendable thigh support, and I've noticed that some Kia's and Hyundai's have this - and they're the only affordable cars that do (thinking of the Sorento, Sonata and Cadenza). Those higher-trim models are still probably not yet within your budget, but perhaps look at their other offerings and see if they don't still fit your son quite well.
