^ Dunno man, 400 hp out of a 2L?
You may very well be right, but i'll let someone else be the guinea pigs.

This. Luxury to me means large(er) engine. I'm a dinosaur but whatever. I'd prefer my 400hp coming from a V8 god willing.

4 Cylinders in a hot hatch, awesome. 4 cyl in a luxo car/suv.....no. V8 please and thank you.

Lighten up Francis.....

Yes, but you are not Mrs Railton, are you?  :rofl2:
I'm guessing, on some points, they feel the same.

Also was pointing out that for some, it isn't an aversion to technology or anything of the sort.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

All this talk about 4 cylinder engines being over-stressed and not a good fit for an SUV.  Nonsense.  The 4 cylinder in our Q5 has been stout and reliable and this is borne out in many online reviews and long-term tests.  I'm pretty sure the Swedes can build a good 4 cylinder, too.  An argument can be made for the fact that a boosted, low compression ratio 4 cylinder is less stressed than a naturally aspirated 6.  The engine is nothing more than an air pump for the compressed air that (in the Volvo use case) the supercharger and turbocharger pour down its throat.  I can't see the logic in overlooking the 4.  Old stereotypes maybe?  C'mon folks!  We're in the 21st century and advances in engine control logic, injection and combustion chamber design, timing, and engine computers, have made that "no substitute for cubic inches" saw go the way of the dino!
How about 4 cylinders are my least favorite engine...period?

V8, V6...then 4 banger.

So that's the reason I wouldn't buy one.

Also...I have yet to drive ANY 4 banger that's as silky smooth as a V8.  Plus 4 bangers sound like crap to my ears.

If I'm spending $50-$60k...it will have the engine
I prefer.
I almost pee my depends when I read that
It should be " If I am buying a 15 year old car I don't want it to have no 4 banger "  ;D

You're all smoking funny cigarettes. What vehicle won the 5-way comparo of new three-row SUVs in this month's C&D?  Hint: it was the only vehicle in the comparison test with a 4 cylinder.  You guys have to get out of the 90's.  Railton, you're shutting the door on some excellent vehicles with your no 4 cylinder rule.

I disagree. They don't sound nearly as good as a V8 or V6..and the NVH is unmatched (V8). Since driving an SUV is dynamic purgatory for me...I at least would want a melodious exhaust to keep me awake and interested.

Whatever you're smoking to disagree with that...please take a hit and pass it!

Which C&D issue BTW? July or June?

Rented an Edge Titanium on Wednesday at YUL. At first I found it very nice. Sync system is very cool. Comfort is excellent but it moves a lot on its suspensions, both my Volvo's have much better control. Auto AC would get a little crazy by turning fan full on all of a sudden for no apparent reason.

Then drove to Quebec, after 90 minutes on the highway, seat started to become uncomfortable. Very disapointed byt the fuel economy. Reset the computer when I got on highway and got 10.3 L/100 km at 118 KPH. for the 250 km trip. My V60 will do about 8 in those conditions and the XC60 will do about 9. The T6 in both Volvos is in a totally different league than the Ford. The size is closer tho the XC60 than 90. Cooling seats were cool!

I was glad to get back in the V60. Biggest drawbacks of the Edge; seats and handling.

So interesting! I had a S60 rental back in October and found the powertrain to be subpar - lack of low end grunt, consumption  and engine refinement were big drawbacks. The seats were comfortable, but everything inside that cabin felt outdated and outclassed.

The Mazda CX-9 we tried a few weeks back checked all the boxes except for one - sound. Around town to our ears it really does sound like an economy 4 cylinder.

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

The 4 pot in the X3 sounds better than the one in my daughter's 2012 X1....They seem to have calmed down the diesel clatter at idle a fair bit......or it has better sound insulation.

Winding it out through the gears sounds OK to me.
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

Yes, I'm sure that that's what's lacking with the CX-9 - extra insulation around the motor. I've no idea if the motor has balance shafts.

^^ because they pump fake sound through the speakers.

Really?.....I did not know that. I thought that was only some of the M models that had active sound.

Ted, what did you think of the dead pedal in the MDX/RDX , I thought it was too large
Infamous dead pedal. Mrs. Railton did not mention it.

So.....absolutely,positively no FGC's?  There are several choices with 6 cylinders, lots of power and good driving dynamics that rule excludes.

Yup. Most FGC, FBC, 4CYL and non height adjustable passenger seats are out. Everything else is fair game.
The only German Mrs. Railton would drive is a Porsche or Audi. The Q5 only comes in 4cyl variants. The SQ5 with a V6 is at least $10k more than an MDX so it's out.

Not FGC or FBC, and I'm sure a height adjustable seat could be installed.  No 4cyl.  No CEL to worry about.

Just read new Tiguan review. Same engine, isn't it?

Engine described as sounding "gritty" and off the line performance was sluggish with turbo lag.
