Utility Vehicle - Reliable & Cheap
« on: May 24, 2018, 01:34:13 pm »
It's getting time to ditch the truck and replace it with something that can at least come kinda close to its utility.

Requirements:

- AWD
- Space to carrying stuff
- Reasonably Reliable
- Minimum towing capacity of 3500 lbs.
- ~$7.5k budget

So far I have found:

2006 Pilot

+ Timing belt done and has been rust proofed.  Those are big.
- Is this the era where the transmissions were made of glass?

2006 Sienna AWD

+ Good price
+ Low kms
+ Looks to be in good condition
-  Not sure about the dealer or if there's any hope of getting service records.  I am thinking no.

2006 4 Runner

+ Reliable
+ Good for our needs
- Less space than the others
- Higher kms (though this may not be a big deal)
- White (after two white cars in a row I am looking for something different.  Not a deal breaker)

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/muskoka/4runner-for-sale/1357076415?utm_source=com.google.android.apps.docs&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialbuttonsVIP&utm_content=app_android

20008 V6 Rav4
+ V6!
+ Towing Package
+ Good price
- Small
- What's it been towing?

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/st-catharines/toyota-rav4-2008-3-5l-v6-with-factory-tow-package/1356857053?utm_source=com.google.android.apps.docs&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialbuttonsVIP&utm_content=app_android

I've also looked at Highlanders but nothing has come up.  I assume that people just hold onto these forever.  Same for the Ridgeline (which would be perfect).

The first Pilot and the Rav4 are my leading contenders. With the AWD Sienna right up there.

Thoughts on any of these?  Or anything I am missing?

How about another oil burner in the fleet? Not sure what the reliability is on these though. Had a buddy who traded his in last summer for a CX9, he never had any major issues outside of warranty.

That's an interesting proposition.   But seeing as this car won't do more than 15k per year I don't know if the Diesel is worth it.

Certainly open to getting another truck.  They are handy, as you know.

Yup.  On the list.  But they seem to really hold their value compared to the Pilot.

The Ridgeline is perfect for my needs.

Found this one.

It's white. Whatever. Looks to be in good shape and the price is decent.

I'm seeing a lot of cars in the $7k print range with plates that are less than a year old.

Like this pilot.

What gives? They bought a lemon?  Curbsider?

I think Honda improved the Pilot transmission in 05 or 06, and that same robust design made it to the Odyssey in 07.

Our plates on the Golf start with are CCAT.  The plate on that Pilot is CCPJ, so it was recently put on the car.

Highlanders are indeed kept forever and can be hard finds.  I know this from experience.  Jumped on it when I found a cherry one.  Oddly though they're priced a bit better than 4Runners despite the lack of supply, but as I noted in the new 4Runner thread, 4Runners have a cult following.

Pilots were sold in larger quantities than Ridgelines, so they're easier to find.  On early ones I'd for sure bypass the integrated trans cooler.  I really like the Gen 1 Pilot - nice big box on wheels, the way an SUV is supposed to be.  They also have a pretty good sized third row.

There are great choices from the 2000- model years from Toyota and Honda.  The RX, Highlander, Pilot, Ridgeline, RAV4, CRV all exploded onto the market and for the most part have proven to be superbly well made vehicles.  They also gave us revamped and dramatically improved vans.  Spending $5-8K on a 2006-ish pick from those segments might be a lot for an old vehicle, but you can pick up a very high quality unit with years and years left on it.

Honestly, as my Highlander is getting close to 350K, it does NOT feel like I've added 200K to it.  It's still a solid vehicle that runs and drives amazingly well.

I think that equation changes a bit with Ontario's milder winters and liberal salt use.

But yeah, $7k fit for a 12 year old car with 160k+ kms is a bit hard to swallow.  But if I can get 4-5 years of reasonably trouble free motoring it's all good.

I checked out that Sienna tonight since I was running errands.  The body is in great shape. No major dings and only one or two scratches of significance.  No rust anywhere.

Looking through the windows the interior looked mint.

The only reservation is that it's on a sketchy small car lot. The kind where "everyone is pre approved!!!".  I'll probably take it for a drive when I get the chance.

I hate those places, but a friend of mine has found a few gems hidden on them.  A lot of new car dealers no longer sell a 12 year old anything, so they go to auction, and sometimes end up squirreled away on those crappy lots.

Quite some years ago now he found an Odyssey van that he still has.

not only that, but many used car dealers are all doing that game now, so it likely isn't as bad as it may initially seem...some new car dealers even have that tagline now too...times are a changing.

Keep in mind a bunch of Ontario plates were replaced under warranty/because there was a REALLY rusty batch. Not sure that explains all of them but who knows

What kind of truck are you replacing?

My vote would be for a Ridgeline. It meets everything you are looking for.

'01 Ford F-150. Runs great but the corner cab rust is killing it.

Looked into a Ridgeline.  No record of the timing belt change but the previous owner said it was done.

Ugh.
