F1 2014 Season
« on: January 15, 2014, 06:54:38 pm »
We start to see online the new cars built under the new "tiny" V6 turbo era starting with McLaren Jan 24, and Ferrari Jan 25. Indications are the cars will look very different, and not in a good way, in order to deal with the cooling and aero challenges.

Meanwhile Christian Horner thinks the retirement rate in the first race could be 50%!

The huge drop in fuel to 100kg is a big error for F1 in my opinion. Its going to make for artificial fuel economy runs and to what end. This is racing, have they lost their way in the purpose of doing this? Is racing only fuel economy? Is racing fuel economy at all? Is this politics designed to alienate racing fans? We will see. Race fans in North America KNOW how boring fuel economy racing is, we saw it in Indy Car but they learned and changed their races to avoid it.

And if indeed saving fuel is the primary purpose of holding a race, which I dispute...... There are hundreds of thousands of spectator passenger cars, idled for all of daylight, when many of them would otherwise be out burning fuel, thereby saving immense amounts of fuel net of the race cars' usage, at every race. Racing saves fuel!

But then the issue is, why should we as racing fans be forced to care! The track is not the subject or the place for it. Would "they" ban racing if these silly rules were not brought in? Not likely.

I hope these F1 changes make it more competitive. While I enjoyed watching Schumacher win 7 titles and Vettel take 4,some teams ended the season with 0 points! Money wins but F1 could increase their profits if we see more "racing" and less Red Bull / Ferrari podiums! Maybe we should all burn less fuel in case we are degrading the environment that future generations are going to inherit. My first car had a 455 Rocket but I have evolved and now drive low emission vehicles. Racing can adapt and still entertain us. :stick:

I expect to see many drivers out walking back to the pits this year. Blown engines or out of fuel.

Two days of testing and, as expected, there have been lots of problems and lots of people putting on brave faces. Vettel who left, having logged only 11 laps in 2 days filled with problems, and in terms of the technical challenge of the new "power units", it looks like Renault is behind Mercedes and Ferrari.

The sound of the cars to me is best described as "raw". I miss the V8 scream but maybe 20 odd of these on track will be OK.

Two more days at Jerez, can Renault recover. There isn't that much testing (8 days after Spain) before the first race. You don't want to have an ulcer and be responsible for one of these teams.  :(

In 2014, will the degenerate Lotus team pay Kimi the money they owe him from 2013?

Maybe it takes getting used to, but IMO some of the new F1 noses look pretty ugly

HA... I was thinking the same thing.  I think the Mercedes AMG is the best lloking car this year.

Looks like they might have the best engi.....er....power unit this year.  So far, anyway.  They're at the top of the timesheets after today.  Williams is using Mercedes power this year, Massa is right there.

God damn Bernie is one ugly mofo.

Anyway, about the V8 vs V6T + ERS business ... I guess it depends on whether you think F1 should be a "pure" motorsport or if it should be an incubator for new commercial automotive technology. You can make an argument either way and I can see merit to both sides.

Bottom line though? This is a hugely expensive sport with or without these pricey turbo engines and without the interest of OEMs using F1 as real world R&D we'd likely see even more financial issues than we do today. The spectacle surely wouldn't be as grand either (though I realize purists would say that the glitz and glamour has nothing to do with racing...which is true). All this is glued together by the fact that from a mass market perspective, a downsized DI turbo engine with hybridization elements is far more interesting than a brutish port injected V8 that spins to 18000 RPM and lasts 2.5 races.

Without the V6Ts, Mercedes wouldn't be there, Honda wouldn't be returning. Ferrari would always be there just because, but I'm not 100% sure about Renault. Cosworth...don't think it matters.

I would have done the new season differently.  Keep the total fuel quantity regulation but.   Any engine...make that any powertrain gas/diesel/hybrid/electrical/gas turbine/fuel cell but it has to meet the Euro 120 gm/CO2 per mile ( which is a fuel economy regulation under the skin) and the associated emission standards of Euro 6.   To make a car like that as fast as the 2013 cars would be a challenge....but I suspect a money no object fuel cell might do it.
