There are a lot of super cheap winter tire choices out there.  Seemingly every Ma & Pa corner garage operation has enough choices that no one has an excuse not to purchase a set for the winter.  But....do these tires provide extra grip or are they just, you know....cheap.

Cooper
Wanly
Winter Claw
Hercules
....etc.

I'd like autos.ca to compare these brands head-to-head and against one ringer tire like the Michelin X-ice 3 or a newer model Bridgestone Blizzak as a reference tire.  The test vehicle could be a Toyota Corolla or something similar.  Something that would represent the average car that a Canadian would be driving in the winter.

Better do it quick, though!  Winter fast approaches.

Interesting idea. It would be good to know if they are 90% as good for 1/2 the price or just little better than all seasons.  That might actually be an idea..... include a good quality brand name all season tire in the test just to see if the cheap winters are better.

   Trust the wedding is cheap..and on skid pan row then...can we call ya HERCULES to be CHAINED ::) .
 ???   any winters are better than FAWLTY SEASONS sez Basil...but...a well driven vehicle beats all the above 98% of the time....the truth may be that is a smartly driven vehicle with decent tread depth (Non Winter) can't get up the road..then maybe stay home or bus/subway your way as even 4 wheelers with dedicated Winters are subject to the law of Physics and most importantly OTHER DRIVERS slip sliding AWAY... :-\ :think: :light:

If Autos can't make this happen maybe just get a skid pad and 10 members to bring their cars and see who can stop the shortest and produce the most G's with their car on winter tires. Won't be a fair fight but would produce some very interesting results.

but then, the different tires and different sizes within just one line of tires all have different traction quality so it won't be scientific test..   but who cares, it would be fun.  ;D

This is getting interesting.  I guess it doesn't have to be fair, as long as it's fun.  For example, I have the benefit of AWD on my TT, but I wonder if someone with properly skinny winter tires versus the 45-series Yokohama W*Drives on my car would be faster on the same closed course.  Wonder if wing / MCO would like to get involved?  Win-win.  Extra exposure for the auto club and also for autos.ca
