But looking for the common, expensive problems of a Boxster, particularly cylinder scoring, can't be done on your own for example.

You can't? I guess it depends how mechanically inclined you are.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!
A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!
A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Yea, most people can't.  Also, most DIY wrenchers, even experienced ones, don't have bore scopes.  And even if you did, when shopping for a car, a Porsche owner is unlikely to let someone off the street dig into their Porsche with a borescope.  And even then, it's 1/2 to 1 hour per side in the Boxster..so "checking it out yourself" is out of the question in this regard.

Hence the requirement for a PPI at a reputable dealer/mechanic.

I would but only when I am serious about the car. If an owner denied that right, fine, let him sell it to someone else. A local had some serious bore scoring in his 2008/2009 Boxster and sold the car for $12K with info about the issue. A high mileage car, a driver who claims he is fast  ::) and does not let it warm up properly, maybe poor quality and probably a bore to stroke ratio that certainly didn't help.

Hence the requirement for a PPI at a reputable dealer/mechanic.

Good luck with that one. Like I said, I have lost all faith in the trades and management. Want it done right, do it yourself.

Of course an owner would deny that right!

I mean, if you put your 911 for sale you'd let some guy off the street tear it apart so he could personally do a compression test?

No f-ing way

Paint gauges are standard fare as what you're really doing is checking for fillers, replacement panels, 2 coats of paint, etc. which then alerts to collision damage.  Any vehicle that gets traded in thats worth anything gets the paint gauge application.

When son sold his 370Z with only 3000 km back to Nissan the GM was all over the car with a paint meter.  Literally every foot.

This Porsche stuff turns me off so hard. Honestly, the level of horseshit involved here is just off the scale.

Ripping cars apart for inspection, using tools to check paint thickness, the insufferable Porsche community, thinly veiled condescension for those that may not be amateur mechanics......

 :hurl:
Yep...I've said it many times here.

The best and worst part about owning a Porsche were other owners.

Some were fantastic, unpretentious owners...others were some of the biggest douches I've ever met.

Update after3 weeks
Decided to stick away from IMS and hence 2009 or higher is the goal. The problem is that 2009-10 are rare to come by especially in a city like Ottawa. Ultimate goal would be to go for a 781 series but those start in 2012 and prices escalates fast. Budget is 40k for the right  toy. Not sure I can find something that fits that ask.
Given that prices of roadsters go up in the spring, is winter best time to scoop one if you find one?

Getting a little late now.  Your looking for a seller that has had the car for more than a few years and never winter driven.  Those units are probably already decommissioned for the season.  But keep looking.  You never know.

Set up push notifications via Kijiji, Autotrader, etc and you'll be notified as soon as one is listed.

Finding the right car takes time. I've waited many, many months finding the right car.

Hi
Found a local boxster S 2014. Price seems high for the 140k kms. Pdk, 19 inch tires, looks pretty good. I might go see it today but trying to get some opinions about buying a high mileage car and what to expect to have to replace in that near future.

I'm assuming its the grey one on Autotrader? Seems like the owner took good care of it & already had a PPI done at the Porsche dealership. The car looks great as does the interior. I wonder how much use it got in the winter though as winter wheels are included? And he's saying that it's mainly highway miles, which explains the higher mileage. I agree the price is a bit high at $44k for the mileage. There's a 2015 with only 25k kms & they want $54k, so $10k less for 115k more kms? I'd think around $35 - $38k would be fair.
