Manual SUV - Rav4 vs Honda crv vs VW Tiguan
« on: June 29, 2020, 02:56:29 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking to buy a manual SUV. I have a VW GTI, but it's getting small with a car seat (he is 1 year old). Not enough room in the passenger side and the trunk is not that big. I normally don't take a stroller in the car, but it fits if I need to.

I only want to buy a manual one and I know it's hard to find, but it's just personal preference. Looking for a used one, maybe max 10 years old and prefer low mileage, 100k or less would be ideal.

I was considering those 3 options:
- Toyota Rav4
I think this one is not built in manual after 2004 in Canada so it would be hard to find one with a low mileage. Correct me if I'm wrong.

- Honda Crv
I heard it's good one, but don't know if built in manual and till when.

- Volkswagen Tiguan
I think they are still being built in manual and I've seen 2010 with low mileage, but I read they have several issues that are expensive to have them fixed, but after they are fixed is a good suv.

Out of my options which one would you recommend? They all have similar space. I am mostly concerned for an suv that is reliable, relatively inexpensive to maintain, doesn't come with a lot of manufacturer problems. And please, feel free to give me any other suggestions for suv.

The reason for suv, just more space, we are outdoorsy family. Hiking, camping, biking, etc. Not looking to do any crazy off roading. Just regular forestry road would be the maximum.

Thanks in advance

I know you didn’t ask for it but I’d suggest the Golf Sportwagen. Seem like you’re asking for it.

This. The Alltrack version also gives you a bit of extra ground clearance.

Outbacks and Foresters were also offered with a manual up until fairly recently.

The Tiguan only offered a manual with FWD. Same for the Mazda CX-5, I believe.

Probably not easy to find and likely not the best choice but the Jeep Renegade and Compass both offered a manual as well.

Thanks, will check the Sportswagen too.

Subaru is also another brand I like, I found most of the Foresters sold are ver old, but I guess is luck.

Tiguan I saw that is only offered in FWD with manual :(

I personally don't like Jeeps

Thanks for the suggestions!

Subaru Forester/Outback/Crosstrek is your likely best bet if you want a newer, low mileage, AWD manual SUV.

Do you need or want AWD? Do you want an SUV or just more space? If your answer is no and more space, 2012-17 Mazda 5 gets my vote.

I remembered the Sportwagen being a little small when I sat in the back, and car seats take up a lot of room. Tiguan is on the smaller side, but the last manual RAV4 is as well. CRV is nice, but going with either Toyota or Honda will get you an older vehicle. CX-5 was available in manual up to 2018 I think, you won't find too many unfortunately. Forester and Outback as others have mentioned.

Or... YOLO...

The SportWagen doesn't have much rear seat room actually

Yeah. There's not a ton of room but they do fit adults comfortably.

Hmm, space and a manual...has to be a Porsche Cayenne.  Best SUV with a manual that you buy.  Plus these have been decently reliable overall.

Maybe if we knew you'd budget that might help narrow it down.

none available anymore in manual afaik, at least in Quebec.

Sounds like he's looking for used cars anyways.

This would be a nice option :( Too bad it's in ON and I'm in BC :(
Subaru is also a good choice, I haven't seen any ads like that one around here

Not really AWD, more looking for a bit of extra room and higher clearance. Yes, you are right, honda or toyota would be older cars. Will look into mazda and subaru too :)

That changes everything.

For that kind of money you would only be able to get the previous gen Tiguan which I wouldn't think is much bigger if any than a Golf.

I'd be looking for the best Mazda5 I could find. Do wonder if the Kia Rondo came in a manual as they are similar in size to the Mazda5.

Kia Rondo came in manual but only with the lowest LX 5 seat trim. The cargo space is a tad bigger without the 3rd row seats.

Chevrolet Orlando also came in a manual from the base LS up to the 2LT trim and all trims had 7 seats. I’d avoid the LS at all costs though, no A/C.
