Forgot about Stan Rogers, good call.

Me too....Northern Passage is a fantastic tune!!

It's Northwest Passage you dolt!   ;D

I agree with Stan, Tom and Gordon as great Canada-centric musicians.  Blue Rodeo as well - lots of local references in their songs.  English Bay and Hasn't Hit Me Yet come to mind.

The very first cd I bought was trouble at the henhouse. As others have said already, I knew the day was coming soon but it is still sad when that day actually arrives.

New Orleans may be sinking but my heart has sunk.

My favorite band. I followed them for decades. Key element to my evenings in my party days and responsible for at least part of my hearing loss.

I will miss Gord and his music.

I first met Gord Downie during their second visit to Winnipeg. In 1988, I think.

I was working at 92 CITI at the time and The Hip were doing a show at Red River College. I was a former student, so I was always welcome to attend shows there. The band played in the courtyard outside. It was a fabulous show. Afterward, I got backstage. Gord and I sat together and talked for about 30 minutes, about everything! When it was time to go, Gord apologized for talking my ear off.

The entire band were great guys.

Their music was always a little hit and miss for me. A lot of their earlier stuff is fantastic but a lot of songs while great lyrics was a bit dull musically. Gord seemed like a class act and fantastic guy. Takes a special person to remain that down to earth when they have attained icon status.

That's what I have found so interesting.

A lot of Canadian musicians have talked about what he meant to them.  And every single one has said what a great person he was, how he always had time for them and how he went out of his way to make people feel special.  A rare bird indeed.

I was never much of a Hip fan, and only really liked "Little Bones," but his death is a great loss to the country.

Sarah Polly's cover of "Courage" is one of the best covers of all-time, and a testament to Downie's and The Hip's awesome songwriting talent.

The big loss is how much impact Gord had outside of music.  He was so giving of both time and money and was very committed to a lot of causes.

I'm not a rabid Hip fan, but have most of their CDs from the era when CDs were sold, and really enjoy the sing-along-songs.  "38 years old" is stand out - very original, interesting, well written and one of those songs that gets stuck in your head.
