Winners and losers (sales wise) for 2023 - US data
« on: January 04, 2024, 04:55:26 pm »
Fun piece by C/D: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g46285875/auto-sales-2023-winners-losers/

Winners:

minivans, EXCEPT the Sienna, down 3% (supply may be the culprit)
Lexus SUVs (+34%)
Buick - yes, Buick, the whole brand gaining 63%, much of it on strong Encore GX sales (+92%)
Ioniq5 (+48%)
MX-5 (+45%)
Bolt (+63%)

Losers:

Jeep (-6%)
BMW SUVs - apparently the electric versions limited the damage to -2%, while X5/6 had double-digit losses
Colorado/Canyon (-20% - blame the changeover)
Frontier (-24% for the updated model !!)

I had no idea the Pacifica is still being sold, never mind being the minivan volume leader.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Hugely popular here in QC, tons of the PHEV versions around. If only the damn thing was reliable, it's just about the best family vehicle out there. Drove at least three of them over the years, top trim gas, mid trim PHEV and bottom trim gas, all really good all-around.

I wonder how long insurance companies allow that to continue? Lexus is laughing all the way to the bank.

They should charge a penalty for "smart" keys. Wondering if manufacturers moving to "electronic" keys (ie smartphone apps) will help or further fuel the problem.

On second thought, there should be a huge insurance discount for manual transmissions.

Yeah I  said it before.  Right now those popular brands has no incentive to make their cars less "stealable" quite the opposite actually.  I guarantee internally they have all those numbers, how many repeat customers from thef.

If cars have GPS and all that technology, how can they not know if it's driving some place else in the world?

Trying to get my head around Buick.  I honestly don't see them on the road...or perhaps they are so non descriptive that I don't notice.

And EV’s.. Since those cars mostly get shipped to Africa and Middle East, since no charging infrastructure there, EV’s are not desirable.

Even the thieves won't put an EV on a boat.  ;D

That GPS is one of the first thing to be disabled with serious car thieves. Joyriders, not so much.
