The article does't mention it but the Winnipeg connection is that Colebourn was a Veterinarian with the mounted calvary unit, Fort Gary Horse located in North Winnipeg. Colebourn named the bear after his home city. After the war he came back to Winnipeg and worked as a vet on Croydon Ave. for years. The museum at the McGregor Armoury (Fort Gary Horse) has lots of memorabilia and the whole story.
