Would have the potential to give sailor's ML thread a run for the money...
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

I was looking at E55s.  The SL55 would be similar to service.

You can't believe all of the service records I saw where people spent $10-$15k (and more) in 3-4 years on maintenance.

You have to REALLY sure this is something you want.

It's not the maintenance that scares me, it's the fact that with one relatively modern car I am worried that I might get bored. I wouldn't mod it, I'd DIY some maintenance, but that's it....Might get boring? Iunno.

That Autotrader one is nice, and I've seen it before, but there's no way I could live with Blue. Needs to be Black....Or if it's an absolute steal I could do Silver or White.

Tough. A lot of these were daily driver's for the original owners, especially in Toronto. I see AMG GT's and similar stuff around the office everyday, all year around. City cars used to commute up and down Yonge street, so not ton of kms, but they're hard kms.
Again, I am ok with that....I want to be able to drive it without cringing every time the odometer ticks over another km.

My folks still have an 2003 SL500 at home and I'm pretty sure it's still only got around 50k on the odo.

I'm not super familiar with any of the mechanical issues (there may have been some), but I know they had lots of fun with electrical.   That car has two batteries with the power hard top and was constantly having issues.   Might not be so bad for someone who knows what they're doing.

Looks pretty though.

:censor: man. I like that. I'd want one with half the KM.

Oh you can have one with half the km. But double the price.

I will add that I do wish there was a service that would search for a particular car you wanted, make sure it's in good working order, etc. Obviously a dealer would do that but it would be nice if there was someone that would do it free reign. I just don't have the time to spend researching a crazy used car buy like I used to (looking through forums for problems, etc.).
I can do that. It's what I do.

But it's a long process. And when one is found you have to buy it NOW...or, for even further protection, pony up for a PPI.

Most car buyers don't buy cars in that manner. Which is why such a service rarely exists.

The maintenance didn't scare me...But the cost of parts for maintenance and the seemingly endless maintenance did. I enjoying working on my cars...but not THAT much.

I too get bored easily. But....It's sooooo nice owning and driving a top shelf car. My LS is probably the least exciting car I've owned. Yet, here I am enjoying and looking forward to driving it everyday....because it's just so facking nice.

It's hard to explain to shelf luxury cars. You don't "get" it until you own one and drive it everyday.

My other issue...Once you own a premium luxury car, it's hard to go back to lesser cars. You notice the small things, the quality, etc. Things you come to really appreciate that maybe before you didn't care about.

I hear what you're saying. I test a different car every week, so I run my daily (3 hours worth) of commuting in a huge variety of vehicles, from low rent work vans to $200K luxury cars. After almost 4 years of that, there are VERY few cars that I miss after handing the keys back. It's probably because I am desensitised a bit, but also that this stuff - even the big $ stuff lack soul and personality.

In my old junk, I can tell you with the outside temperature based on how the steering feels. There's a bond between man and machine there that no amount of engineering can replicate. Without that bond, anything I drive feels like an appliance....from the lowly Chevy Cruze I am in right now, to the B7 Alpina I drove a couple weeks back...Appliances. Show me the nicest most expensive dishwasher in the world, it's not going to get me excited.

That's my worry with the SL55. In theory it's everything I want....Massive power, yet refined, quiet and comfortable, with a body style that's absolutely timeless IMO.  But will I bond with it enough after driving it for a few months that it'll keep me interested.

^^It's odd.  You find it difficult to bond with uber premium cars...yet no issues with decidedly ho-hum 90s GM stuff.   ;D

I was about to say that I can't explain it...but I'll give it shot:

For me, that old GM stuff (and the British stuff) is sorta like the girl the grew up across the street from you. You know everything about her; her faults, her alcoholic mom, her scars, fears and weaknesses. But you also know all the good things about her too; all her strengths, how to care for her, her likes, dislikes, etc. Imagine the bond you might share with someone you know that well. Any "other" car is more like the girl from a few towns over. Sure, maybe she's gorgeous, trendy, well dressed, and maybe you've taken a test drive or two; but you only know what you've heard. Now maybe the mystery is intriguing, maybe the grass is greener, but will you ever be able to share a bond comparable to what you could with the first girl?

I was the same way with Mustangs.  I had an 1987, 1989 and 1994.  My bro had a 1966 and a 1987 LX.  My youngest bro had a 1979 (was a 4 banger, we transplanted in a V8) and then a 1970.  My step mom had a 4 banger LX.  So Mustangs galore.  I know them inside and out.

But now?  They just feel like cheap POS to me.  Oh I still like them quite a lot (I'd like to build a really nice notchback). But....meh...after driving nice stuff, it would be hard ot get back into something so un-refined and cheap feeling.

But bang for buck, they were tough to beat and fun (at the time).

I can understand bonding with an MGB or various other old British cars, like a Lotus Elan or a A-H 3000.   But those old GM cars ( and Mustangs as well I guess) are just not in my background so it would not occur to me to ever want one!

The odd drip of 20-50 is good for a driveway isn't it?

I'm kind of set on getting a ~'14 335i to replace the GTI at this point. Unfortunately I'm rather picky and what I want isn't common: A real colour, manual, and relatively loaded – and hopefully with reasonable kilometres and CPO warranty. Ultimately I want RWD too but those are super rare (only 16 2014s built for Canada with a manual). I'm partial to the M Performance edition which was offered in Valencia Orange and Laguna Seca Blue. I have a line on a RWD orange one and an AWD blue one, both of which may be available in the fall. Barring that, I'd settle for an Estoril Blue xDrive model as long as it's optioned how I like it.
