i've only ever had a broken spring once...it was on my 2000 Ford Taurus and it broke around 2009ish...fortunately for me, it was covered under a "secret" recall so all 4 suspension bits on my car (all 4 corners) were replaced free of charge.  :)

I broke the spring on my Cherokee when I drove it a little aggressively down some washboard and then flexed the hell out of it on some boulders. Short of overloading the spring, how the hell does a spring break on a car that hasn't seen heavy loads or offroad abuse?!?!!?  ??? ???
Lighten up Francis.....

^^ Rust.

Not the case in this issue. The ML is fairly new.

I don't know, it's a 2011 driven back east.

There was rust on the rear springs of my 2010 GTI when I replaced the shocks a couple of years ago. Just the bottom coil near where it sits on the perch. I probably should have just replaced them while I had everything apart.

The spring didn't look rusty to me....still black paint on most of it.

In another vein, while driving home last night I got a red (usually not good) message in the dash saying "Key not detected". It lasted 10 seconds or so and then went away. Happened three times in about 20 minutes.

The people that post the FGCs aren't as bad as we think haven't read this thread.

Agreed!  I have friends that are on at least their second ML and they are not the type of people that would buy another if they had ongoing issues with them.  The guy I go on road trips with quite often in the summer has a 2001 Z3 and he has had no troubles since buying it over 7 years ago.

My relatives in NYC who i visited had just picked up a BMW X5 last Saturday. I spent some time going through with them the features and functions.

We'll see what, if any, issues they have. They're still driving my X3. Was weird seeing my former car in their garage- needs a wash !  :-\

Looks like it was a false alarm and the fob just needed a battery change. it's a bit odd because I'm pretty sure you get a "low battery" message for a bit before the fob quits working. This time it just seemed to go from working normally to "No Key Detected"

Voltage droop on these batteries is pretty harsh at the tail end of their life.  It happens.

in the case of my car, it was something to do with rust or something...you didn't get a recall for it, but if you had a failure, they'd replace them free of charge.

i think i found the recall here:  https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2000/FORD/TAURUS/4-DR#recalls

that was the US site, so i'm not sure if it's 100% the same here...my rear one failed, not the front, but they just replaced all 4 for me and installed the guards...i sold the car a couple years later.

So mine turned out not to be broken. The was a line of some sort that sure looked like a break but wasn't. It even fooled the MB service manager when he came out to look to see what code was on the spring before ordering one.

So, for a variety of reasons, I was actually thinking of perhaps keeping the ML until next fall or perhaps early next year.

Last night the blind spot warning system randomly went off again while making a right turn. This AM the check engine light stayed on after I started the car. I think it's trying to tell me something. ::)

I'm starting to suspect the dealership hires attractive staff...
I love it when a plan comes together.
