I broke the spring on my Cherokee when I drove it a little aggressively down some washboard and then flexed the hell out of it on some boulders. Short of overloading the spring, how the hell does a spring break on a car that hasn't seen heavy loads or offroad abuse?!?!!?
in the case of my car, it was something to do with rust or something...you didn't get a recall for it, but if you had a failure, they'd replace them free of charge.
i think i found the recall here:
https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2000/FORD/TAURUS/4-DR#recallsthat was the US site, so i'm not sure if it's 100% the same here...my rear one failed, not the front, but they just replaced all 4 for me and installed the guards...i sold the car a couple years later.
