Test Drive: 2013 Audi A4 Allroad
« on: January 28, 2013, 06:31:28 am »

The high riding, butched up A4 Allroad drives just like the A4 Avant it replaces, but unfortunately loses its good looks in the transformation.

"Audi has had to ruin the gorgeous A4 Avant styling and ‘butch’ it up" the autor wrotes.
Audi try to "Europeanize" the wagon here in North America, reinventing the very popular luxury class station wagon. The  bunch of Volvo Cross Country, Subaru Outback and Audi Avant never were sold well here. But if Audi change the customer perception may be they will succeed? I personaly am in doubt.

We did a comparison of very small sub-compact crossovers.  The best vehicle achieved 9.6 L/100 km while the rest were well over 11.0 L/100 km.  For our conditions it is, never mind the fact the allroad is permanent AWD and heavy.

People always talk wagons but I don't see anybody buying  :) There were several options 10 years ago but sales did not convince the auto makers to keep going. It is what it is  :)

I am buying a wagon right now, never will drive one of those stupid CUV or SAV idiotic slushmobiles. A Volvo V70R Audi Allroad, or Saab 9-5 Aero will do everything a CUV can do and be better to drive while doing it
If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

I agree with jamesautos. The Berlin taxi has averaged 9.7l/100km and it's bigger, heavier than the A4 allroad and has AWD.

It still looks like a wagon to me, as does the Outback, Volvo V70R, Venza, etc.  I don't really care for all the body cladding on most of them.  It looks tacky to me, but buyers must like it and massive wheels as the manufacturers can't seem to sell their station wagons without the wagon on steroids look.

But, I'll continue to call a spade a spade.

quite. But are you seriously saying your Venza or a CRV could hang with a 9-5 Aero or a V70R if the driving gets brisk? Also the insides of those wagons are positively cavernous. Not sure if my opinion is far off, but you are right it is an opinion nonetheless.

At least the A6 Allroad is more than just a few cosmetic bits bolted on. It has an air suspension system that allows the driver to adjust the ride height for unmade roads, etc. Personally I like the way the A4 Allroad looks, but it's a bit silly that it has no additional functionality.

nice review mike.  i agree with your comments about the exterior design.  why does this "vehicle" conjure up images of eastern europeans wearing full track suits and lots of gold?   first they killed the manual transmission then they killed the wagon.    :'(

The "vehicle" that conjures up those images is more like a tinted S-Class or the boxy SUV Mercedes makes.  I can't see any Eastern European syndicates propagating any wagon so that's just ridiculous.

Aside from that, I've seen this wagon in person and think it looks amazing so I don't agree with Mike's opinion of its exterior, but looks are very subjective.  I quite like the masculine aspect and would drive this over a 'regular' Avant anyday - personally.  I even really like the previous Allroad.  I always thought it was sharp and original.
