Taking out extended warranty - worth it or not?
« on: January 07, 2017, 08:30:39 pm »
I don't usually take out a warranty on a used car but we got burned once even after it was inspected by an independent shop.
It is for an Infinity G 37 S 2008 110km.  Reputable dealer.
The warranty is through A-Protect.
Thank you.

Why three different threads for the same car?

Multiple threads aside, I wouldn't bother.
To be honest, you should go with whatever makes you feel comfortable on these things. You don't want to regret NOT getting it because someone here said no.

aftermarket warranties are great if you are sure your car is going to break. hopefully you aren't going to buy a car that you feel so sure of it's failure.

a-protect isn't the worst out there, but they are definitely not the best either. even with the warranty, they usually have most of their plans with a high deductible and a max cost per visit... so say you pay a grand for your 2500 limit fix and a 150 deductible...

most of these companies have specific shops they work with and they charge extra (whether you want to call it their cut or whatever) for a job you can do elsewhere... say a transmission job that if you shopped around, you could get done for 2k... they will charge 3k. you think, "well, it's not too bad and it is going to be covered..."

but in reality, you paid 1000 for the warranty, 150 for deductible and then 500 for the overage.... so 1650 paid instead of 2000... not such of a life saver. keep the money in your account for a rainy day and just be smart about where you get your work done.

Avoid third party warranties.  They usually have a ton of out-clauses that mean you won't get your repair covered.  Waste of money.  If you can't get Nissan OE coverage, save your money and keep it in case you need a repair.

Honestly, if you're buying a car like an older Infiniti and you're super concerned about repairs because they'll break you, then spend the same dough on something like a Corolla or Camry and get something new(er) and with warranty coverage.

I'm all for extended warranties, hell, we just bought a stove and I got an extra 4 years for it. As expensive as cars are to fix, a good warranty is a no brainer to me.
Lighten up Francis.....

key word being 'good'. extension of factory warranty is best... all others are not quite so great... all the way down to not being worth the paper they are written on.

In all the years I've been buying vehicles I've never purchased an extended warranty.
I did this time.
