I wonder is a former owner of the house was thinking he was sealing a gap and used roofing tar on it

But that smells....he says no smell.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

At the break where it is leaking, it is like a liquid honey. By the time it gets to the register, it is dry to the touch.

You would be surprised what contractors shove down ducting. One newer house I bought was brutal, had to take most of the duct work apart in the basement to clean them out and re-seal before the renos. facking pigs.
