Biden, plans to impose tariffs on certain strategic sectors of China, particularly targeting electric vehicles (EVs). The announcement is expected soon and is speculated to include tariffs on goods such as semiconductor equipment and electric vehicle parts. This move indicates a further escalation in trade tensions between the two countries, potentially impacting the global supply chain for EVs and related technologies.

Well, well, well. The party may be ending for EVs at a pretty awkward time, slowing sales, fading consumer interest and now governments worried about loss of tax revenue from gasoline sales!! And horror or horrors, a per km distance travelled charge will be levied on EVs in New Zealand. That's far too tempting a revenue target for the federal government here to miss out on given it's cash strapped status and spendthrift proclivity.

Global policymakers are imposing new taxes on electric vehicles as the shift away from combustion engines threatens to leave a $110bn hole in government revenues owing to a drop in receipts from fuel duties.

The UK, New Zealand, Israel and the majority of US states are among jurisdictions introducing tax changes and charges on EVs and hybrid vehicles designed to raise funds and compensate for declines in petrol and diesel excise taxes.

The measures are varied, running from registration fees to road usage charges based on mileage and taxes on public charging points. EV owners and green campaigners say they will slow society’s switch from gas-guzzling vehicles to lower-emissions alternatives.

Quote
IEA data shows the shift to EVs displaced $10bn in revenues from petrol and diesel taxes globally last year, net of modest gains from new electricity tax revenue. The net loss is projected to rise to $110bn by 2035 if countries meet their electrification targets, robbing governments of vital funds that are often ringfenced to pay for road maintenance and transport improvements.

Quote
Europe, where countries tend to charge higher taxes on petrol and diesel compared with the US and China, made up 60 per cent of global revenue losses last year. While countries will claw back some funding in electricity taxes, the revenue is marginal compared with the loss in fuel taxes, the agency said.

Last month New Zealand introduced road use charges based on distance travelled for EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles for the first time, saying the policy was badly needed to raise revenues for road maintenance as fuel tax collections fell.

Owners of light EVs face charges of NZ$76 ($46) per 1,000km, a fee in line with equivalent diesel-powered vehicles. Plug-in hybrid owners must pay NZ$38 per 1,000km, a lower charge because they already pay tax on fuel.

Just to sum up basically. Biden is set to announce a significant increase in tariffs on certain Chinese goods this week, aimed at protecting American workers. Tariffs on items such as Chinese electric vehicles will see substantial hikes, with some tariffs doubling or even quadrupling in targeted sectors. Biden is going for 102.5% and Trump, says 200%   :-\

Trudeau's relationship with China hasn't been great.

Hopefully he followed through with massive tariffs as well.

America was ahead of the game a few years ago. Now, look where they are. It seems silly to stifle competition. The Chinese are ahead in the game, heavily subsidized though, even more so than here with VW, Honda, and Stellantis. I wonder if that will affect the Buick Envision, Volvo's S90, and Polestar 2, as well as the Lincoln Nautilus.

. It seems silly to stifle competition.

They are not stifling competition as evidenced by EVs from other countries.

They are seeking to stiffle UNFAIR competition. Variously, China does not follow labor laws, environmental laws, they use forced labor, child labor, pay low/no wages, steal/copy intellectual property and patents, etc

There is an ENORMOUS difference between competition and unfair competition.

You seem to be a bit obtuse in understanding the difference between the two.

Or are you just a Communist fan boy?

Chinese-made cars are here, They've already surpassed the West in battery technology. Competition like this is necessary; nobody wants $90,000 EVs. Let's have some affordable options. If they're not very good, nobody will buy them. Let the market take care of itself.

Rockett, you're already using products likely made through child labor, possibly even more, and others made through questionable environmental practices. Thus, that argument is dismissible, and you've made it before. Certain crops such as cocoa, coffee, tea, and cotton have been associated with child labour and exploitation in regions where they're cultivated. Additionally, industries like electronics manufacturing, mining, brick production, and fishing have faced scrutiny for employing child labor. Even in the US, instances like KIA's involvement in child labor have been exposed, prompting the enactment of laws against it. Child labour is pervasive, with 14 states permitting minors aged 14 and older to work.

Easy demonstration as to why manufacturers are very nervous about the recent crop of Chinese vehicles: the BYD Shark.

This awd mid-sized truck will be built in mexico, evading both the chicken tax and the new 100% EV tax...if BYD decides to come to the US and Canada.

The PHEV version pairs a 1.5 litre four with two electric motors, for 480 hp combined. The 30 kWh battery is claimed to offer 100 km of range. Towing capacity is 5,511 lbs (2,500 kg) and payload rating is 1,841 lbs (835 kg). It even has fast charging, rare on PHEV's.
