I've been thinking lots about adventure riding/touring the last few weeks and how much I miss it. For me, this was among the most fun riding I've ever done. So I'm in the very early phase of possibly looking for an adventure bike. I used to be the totally hardcore minimalist adventure rider. I did many with nothing more than a dirtbike with dual sport tires and a backpack/seat pack holding my gear. Those hardcore days are well behind me now..as well as my 20-something physique I had then.
So I'm looking for something a bit more "grown up", but there really aren't too many bikes that fit the bill.
The BMW GS is nice...but I can't stomach the $15K price. And even used they are $8k plus with a bazillion miles. I'm also not fond of the 500+lb weight. This is relatively light for streetbike...but a tip over on a trail/gravel road is a huge PITA to pick up. And you WILL fall over.
Since I'm a KTM guy, I'd love to have a 690 and it would be extremely competent off road, it's light, etc. But it's not very comfy for long highway stints...which is a frequent part of the whole adventure riding thing. They are supposed to come out with a 390 Adventure...which would be a dream come true! But they've been talking about it since the 390s came out..so who knows if it will ever be available. That would be my first choice. But it (allegedly) won't be shown until the earliest at the EIMCA show..which is November 2016. So that would mean no adv. riding for this year.
The revised-for-2016 Honda CB500X looks very promising. There's already tons of aftermarket adventure goodies for it, since it's been on the market a few years. And owners report it's tough as nails and uber reliable (it's a Honda). The engine isn't going to win any HP battles, but it will cruise at 125km/h all day and deliver in the 3s for fuel consumption and once into more challenging roads/trials, the power is more than adequate. It comes with ABS too. And the weight is 430lbs..ready to ride. Not too shabby. All this for $7k CDN brand new.
So the question is....do I wait for the KTM? Hmmmm....
