Tire swap time! The Golf's WeatherTechs were a perfect fit, but despite being reassured by the dealership, I anticipated a tight fit with the 16" wheels. I was right.

Nothing rubs, but boy was that close!

After a classic Canuck weather combo over the weekend (wind, rain, freezing rain, snow and freezer temps), I fully expected something to be frozen in the external charging components. I was right. First, the trigger release of the wall charger was pretty stiff, and I immediately noted that this part should be made of metal, not plastic. It did release without snapping. Second, the flimsy portal cover swung shut with no issues, but the little twist knob to secure it place was frozen in the "open" position. A quick blow of my own hot air settled that.

I have a string of plug-ins lined up for this winter, and I will pay attention to how winter-proofed the charging portals are.

I'm curious to see how the weather impacts your electricity usage...

A full charge takes, so far, the same amount of power, between 6.24 and 6.43 kWh.

Range is another thing. Most EVs I drove under winter conditions lost 20-25 km of range as soon as one turned the heater on. Ditto with the e-tron, I lose 10-12 km of range on my morning commute, with the car outside in the cold. At highway speeds, that means 18-20 km of total range on a full charge under 0 degrees. Even on surface streets, heat seems to take precedence over driven speed as total range rarely exceeds 22 km. My "poverty spec" e-tron doesn't have cabin conditioning when plugged in, something I did not expect as dealers where adament that the feature was standard. I guess they don't sell many Audis without Nav (the "extended" MMI is bundled with the Nav option).

For the evening commute, the car begins its journey indoors in a parking garage, and sometimes it will make the 26 km trek back home in EV mode alone. HVAC is on, but with the cabin already at 15 degrees, it has to work less to stabilize it at my 20 degree setting.

Thanks for the reply!  And yeah, I really meant range.

Absolutely mental that you can't heat the cabin when it's plugged in.   Doesn't every other EV have that option?

Wasn't a bad question as written. In theory, batteries have losses in cold weather and I was wondering if the car would pull more juice to keep the battery topped up. Some RTFM may educate me on that possibility.

Can't remember the exact vehicle(s), but yes, cabin conditioning isn't available or std on all EVs. And yes that's stupid. And I bet that my car has all the hardware and harness to use that feature, and only software needs to be activated or uploaded. I wrote about that to the Audi pr guy - dealership won't answer.

Full charge on 120V during the day, drove uphill for a late PM meeting, down / up a spiralling parking garage, came back down and drove home. Ice came up two corners from my house after about 32 km with partial use of HVAC. 7 degrees make a whole lot of difference!

No college daughter on board for the morning commute today, so I tested a theory. 3 degrees, dry roads, starting on a full charge. I leave the HVAC off, and put the seat heater at one bar. Kept the gloves and the hat. In the interest of science, I did not freeze, and got to work with 3km to spare in full EV mode  :).  Yup, seat heaters draw much less power than hvac. No wonder the people I see driving iMiEV's in winter time are all bundled up! They don't have the ICE backup...

If sensors on autonomous vehicles are as "compatible" with ice and snow as Audi's, well folks we'll be doing all the driving for the foreseable future  :) Got tons of random beeping this morning until the ice fell off.

FWIW, my Mazda3 GX has aftermarket heated seats installed - they get toastier than most would want (there is one spot on the passenger seat where the "sport cloth" fabric has melted :o ), but I love them for that reason (the heat, not the damage aspect :P).

One thing I love about auto climate control is that the car doesn't start blowing cold air on me.  I don't have auto climate control, and so I leave the fan completely off until I get up to temp.

...except the GX also doesn't have an engine temperature gauge ::).

Point of all this is to say that 99% of my commutes (10km each way; ~15 mins) are done with the cabin heater completely off and just the heated seat on max (I turn it to low after about 8 mins since my backside roasts).  I don't wear a jacket, hat, or gloves - just a suit (no tie ;D).

In my dad's RX400h, I know that the cabin heater will cause the ICE to stay on until the car's at temperature, and so I also typically would leave the climate control completely off.  Same thing, heated seats help a lot.

...not an option with rear-seat passengers, however, unless the car is also equipped with heated rear seats.

And also FWIW, my wife, who HATES to be cold, never misses the cabin heat with the heated seats on - she actually turns the temp control to COOL in the Mazda since the seats get so toasty.

Did you return your TDI with steelies or the 15" rims?

It is my duty to report to you how this thing copes with my daily grind, and this morning it did something new.

-16 outside, -27 with windchill cars can't feel, but humans most surely will. Coldest morning of the year so far (and we received 20cm of snow this week, so we're back into Winter Wonderland mode)

Full overnight charge. I press the starter button...and the ICE came to life right now and stayed on for the entire morning commute, except during certain traffic stops. There must be a system temp below which the EV mode is disabled, but here at least it's much lower than what I experience with a C-max Energy.

Oh and the sensors just freak out when covered in snow. I had to turn them off the day we received the dumping.
