This could possibly cause the opposite to the desired effect. Tailgating (hey! let's see if we can drive inside of and stay in the beam!), people putting high beams on in response to what they perceive as "arrogance" or at a minimum, annoyance, or other questionable driving activities. And as a distraction from maintaining a full surround field of view of what's going on while driving, I think its definitely dangerous.

Is it even legal? Is it like a floodlight on the back of a car?

In the past its been proven things that make you stand out on the road, especially anything that sends a message to the effect that "I'm better/more important than you", is not wise as it may occasionally cause a response.

Reminds me of the euro standard rear fog lights - one bright red light on the driver's side. Excellent in bad conditions, but most people are not even aware it exists and leave it on in clear weather, blinding drivers behind them. I saw it in Canada on SAABs and Mercs.

My C30 has the rear fog lamp.  I have used it on the highway during heavy downpours, as well as some snowy conditions.  I make sure to switch it off once conditions improve.

This is a stupid idea because tailgating is speed, time, and distance calculation. Unless this devise can adjust for that then it is completely useless.

It's not a half bad idea. Most people have no clue how close is too close.

I don't think that having lasers on the back of a car is illegal. Ramming, tailgating or running with high beams on certainly is.

A friend of mine in highschool had a 1M candela floodlight, which he used to wield at tailgaters. THAT was illegal, but very effective.

I believe new gen Mercs have a rear facing radar sensor. We can make it happen, we have the technology ;D

Anyone who took driver's ed knows how close is too close.  That said, if you tried driving according to those guidelines in real life, people would be cutting in front of you all day long.

Yeah, those regulations might have worked back in the 50s or 60s when there was much less traffic. These days...I find the guidelines are dependent on the city in question (sometimes the road in question) and time of day.

Interesting idea.  There have been tail lights for bicycles available for a couple of years with this sort of thing.  Yesterday I saw bright white led's inside an older car suddenly flash urgently through the back window when someone got too close behind them.  Never seen that before.  It wouldn't be difficult to design these things with distance and speed factored in.

Actually, it would be better to take it a step farther and add a camera and cellular connection to report the offender to the police.  People who are habitual road bullies would rack up reported offenses really quickly.  Then take their licenses away.  End of problem.

:rofl2: I actually thought about a ball bearing deployment system that would release and puncture radiators of the offenders triggered by a radar.

Anyone remember Dr. No?  I would like to have the oil slick dispenser on the rear of my car.

I had a 1975 GT550 two stroke that would start to smoke pretty badly if the revs were up but it wasn't under load. Not an oil slick, but having a smoke screen was pretty amusing sometimes.  ;D

I don't seem to have a lot of problems with tailgaters on my rear end. I usually just move over.

In Germany where people are generally impatient, I move at a pace that balances traffic flow and risk of being blitzed by photo cameras (remember: 2 km/h tolerance here). If the maximum is 70km/h, I'll usually run 80 under the assumption I'll spot any roadside cameras quickly enough; the person behind me is free to overtake me if he/she feels the need to go 90. It's not my responsibility to punish anyone who rides my rear end because everyone does that here anyway.
