Lead weights and brake cleaner
« on: January 23, 2024, 11:25:47 am »
Was just in at NAPA yesterday, bought a case of brake cleaner as it was still the good stuff.   New stuff is limited to 10% VOC, gonna be crap.   Same for lots of other cleaner/chemicals, starting fluid, etc.
Also bought some lead wheel balancing weights, going to stock up more today.  They're being banned from import in a couple of weeks. :P

Can't say I'll miss the brake cleaner. That stuff is just gross.  :P

I use electrical contact cleaner for just about everything. Might be a bit more expensive, but it works great and actually smells kinda nice. Doesn't leave a greasy residue all over stuff either.

How much does that cost and what do you use?   Brake cleaner is $3-4.50 a can.

I'm going to need some electrical cleaner for an amp I'm about to take apart.

^^ I usually just get the Motomaster stuff from Cdn Tire. I’ll grab a few when I see it on sale (around $7 a can, IIRC.) Cans are small though, prob half the size of the big brake cleaner cans.

I’ve bought it at NAPA too if I’m in there and happen to see it on sale.

Did a bit of googling to understand what brake cleaner and carb cleaner actually is. Had no idea how dangerous it can be when used to clean stuff before welding or grinding:

Yeah, don't use that kind.
I use Kleen Flo 313, non chlorinated

If you don't weld chlorinated is the way to go as it works much better. Non chlorinated brake cleaner is also highly flammable.
