Yeah, no way a clutch job costs that much. Maybe at dealer prices? Find a good indy and you are fine. My mom's Jetta TDI needed a clutch last year and all in with OEM clutch kit it was around $1500 at local indy shop.

 Quick search on ebay. Clutch kits range from 250 - 375 bucks for VW jetta or golf.

My pickup was in the $800 to $1000 range for a clutch when I got it done at an indy. Done in half a day

A bigger thing with those Golf Wagons seems to be if the sunroof leaks or not

Leased a VW Jetta in February, Highline trim,  which is the mid level trim in the revised for 2020 VW trim line up. First VW, this one replaced the leased 2016 Civic. So far I am pleasantly surprised, the 8 speed auto is far more pleasant than the Civic CVT and NVH levels are also better. Absolutely no idea of long term reliability or longevity and that is why it is leased!!
