Is it just me?  Does anybody worry about their safety when looking for vacation destinations, then say a few years ago?  Just look at what happened in Turkey, which until recently has been on a list of places I may visit.  There are many other examples, the attack in Brussels, the attack in France, the attack in Orlando, the attack in Ottawa.  We don't seem to be making any headway with ISIS.

When I do considering going down South, Mexico is off the list.  Sure it is safer on the resorts.  But I want to do more than stay at a resort.

We've been off the resort all the times we've been in Mexico, if you have half a brain, you won't have trouble

I guess I'll be staying North then.  ;D

How many problems have there been in the resort areas in Mexico?

Personally I don't worry about safety. I'd avoid obvious trouble spots (like Turkey) but some idiots that my wife works with said they wouldn't go anywhere in Europe right now.  ::)

I visited Turkey in 2011 and it sad that that country has fallen both politically and from a security standpoint.

I haven't, and don't see the appeal of Mexico. So many coworkers have done business trips and gotten sick, and plus our company considers MX as a "high risk" country now.

I don't really worry too much about one-off events like what happened Bruxelles as a deterrent for Western Europe. Turkey has had repeated attacks in the last couple years and the situation there has been on a downward trend for years.

Besides avoiding the a few obvious places, I'm not too concerned.  Sh!t can happen anywhere you travel and it doesn't effect my travel decisions.  Some horrible things have happened recently in Paris and Brussels, but would that deter me from visiting there again?  Nope.  Personally, I'm probably safer visiting most Euro countries than a good portion of the States in the US.  But it wouldn't stop me from visiting the US either.  When I was in Thailand last year, there were a lot of political warnings and gov't turmoil, etc.  It never stopped me from going and I had an amazing vacation.  I guess I am more adventerous type perhaps.    :-\

^. I actually worry more about those when I'm at work. I followed one down the road for several hundred feet in my truck last summer before it booked off into the woods.  There was a bear running on one side of the road and a fox on the other and the bear was kicking ass!  Those things can really run!  :o

The only thing keeping me from traveling away is my :censor: up knees and the threat of DVT from sitting for too long on a plane.   :P

Why does no one know about DVT here?  Everyone I mention it to has never heard of it, yet it's talked about a lot in Europe, walk around during a flight, less alcohol etc.  Never seen any advice on it over here.

No doubt that they are, but being a pretty seasoned traveler, that's not even close enough of a reason for me to spend my dollars visiting there.

My company's NAFTA headquarters is in the suburbs of Detroit and after doing two business trips my first year, I've never wanted to, or have had to travel back there since. No thanks......although I did pop over to Windsor that first time.
