They were quite rusty, and the wrench is only 6 months old and stored properly in its case at zero. No issues whatsoever with the Forester or Mazda, not my dad's RX.

The lugnuts, I've now been told, have previously been blowtorched to loosen them the get them off. Hag I known that, I wouldn't have put them back in...

the fact that she likely didn't check anything after the first vibration is a huge issue. people just don't notice...

one of my co-workers is a great gal... but car dumb. totally admits it. won't back trucks up... can't drive stick... won't move cars on the lawn.

got a blow out last night and finished going home (luckily was close to home)... turned out a bungee cord went in her tire. now, i'm only speculating, but that doesn't just jam in and POP... it pierces and it eventually tears after driving and continual contact with the road... she didn't notice anything. also didn't know it was a flat until she got home... just figured it was only a km or so, so kept driving thinking it was just a "noise".
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

Still weird. Something is up there. I've done a LOT of wheels and I've never seen anything like that happen...and a good percentage of the time I don't even bother with the torque wrench.

Does that do any damage to the wheels?

It's because they were rusty....hit the torque value without them being seated all the way properly.

Have seen it before.

As an example, you can thread a nut on by hand on clean threads...whereas you can't on rusty ones. So even before the nut is engaged, it's already at a high torque value...which can cause improper torquing.

The explanation below is a bit complex, but I think you'll get the idea.

Ron's correct. I tried cleaning all lugnuts before installing and recommended replacing. I knew the retorque would be highly necessary.

Some lube would have helped.

Otherwise even a re torque would likely still come up short.

No-RISK-san did say she was hot, so maybe she didn't need lube?   :stick:  :run:

Yea, maybe he was thinking of having his nuts torqued...

All the more reason to toss the torque wrench, for lug nuts at least, and just do it by 'feel'. I know I am the odd man out on this one; but most of the cars I work on are way older and rustier than this relatively new VW (i think?) and I usually install lug nuts by using a bit of lube on them and giving them a good tug with a breaker bar. Never had one come loose, never struggled to get them off again. Installing wheel nuts is not rocket science....

The important thing here is that we get pics of said girl.....She's been mentioned in two threads now; quit holding out Noah.  ;D

The other thing that can happen is one comes loose, the slight vibration causes another one to back off just a bit.  Then it gets worse, and eventually with enough driving they'll all come off.

It was on a VW with wheel bolts, not nuts, right?  Combine rusty bolts  with crap design (I've heard of way more bolts loosening than nuts) and I can easily see them all coming out eventually.

I was under the impression you weren't supposed to lube the nuts/bolts because it throws off the torque settings.

We're talking rusty crap here. Lube would have helped.

this relatively new VW (i think?)
2006 Golf 1.9D with 286,000+km.

Is this the same girl that caused you to be extremely late for our lunch date?
No.  That one was was way, way hotter (which is saying a lot since this one was really, really ridiculously good looking).

Correct, it's a lug-stud.

Didn't realize that.  I tried wire brushing off as much rust as possible before reinstalling, and told her I'd order new ones for her - RockAuto has for ~$50 shipped.

Yup.  I'd take a brush and clean them up, maybe some cleaner, but no oil/grease at all.  If they're corroded enough, pitch them and get new bolts or nuts.

I thought they were OK after the wire brush, and they might have been if I had gotten to re-torque them.

...but yeah, lesson learned.  Hopefully the damage isn't too bad and the car won't be a write-off.  I still feel awful even though I technically didn't do anything wrong.
