'21 VENZA winter tire decision
« on: September 04, 2021, 02:25:54 pm »
Original tires are all-season Bridgestone 225 55 R19 99V. For winter I already have 18" wheels (as spec'd in the picture). Should I be sticking with 225mm or go wider 235mm in order to make the winters slightly bigger than the original tires?

I doubt a 4mm difference of diameter will make any difference. I'd just go with what's cheaper and if all things are equal, go with the stock width.

235 are apparently more expensive but in case of DM-V2 it's only several $$ more per tire. 235 width however bumps up the load rating to XL (107) and I'd rather avoid that since it will prolly result in firmer ride.

OK. Pulled the trigger earlier than expected. Blackcircles is having a 10% off sale on a bunch of models. Went with General Arctic 12, FGT  :P , which are mid-pack in reviews. Cheap but should be better than no-names. I like their RT43 but hate the previous generation Arctics. We'll see.

i'm wondering how small i can go...225/65/17 opens up lower cost options, and i assume they'd still clear the brakes, but maybe 225/60/18 is a safer bet.

In my case there were 18" wheels which I physically checked for fitment.

17" may work but it all depends on the wheel design IMO.

FWIW, Harrier does have a 17" wheel option:  (careful, some typos there)

17s would have a nice sidewall on them, but not sure if it's a good idea to drop 2 sizes or not.

Dude..if I can get along with 18" winter rims/tires on an ISF (summers are 19s), you'll be fine.

IQ gets through winters fine with the 19s on her A5 too

If I had 17s lying around I'd try them on and likely went with Blizzak WS90 for the shoes. They have good price on blackcircles now.

i know that...i'm just saying that 17s open up some other options and the tires and wheels are also cheaper.

I stick to this rule: same or better load index & speed rating as OEM's from factory.

i am now contemplating two options.

pass on changing my tires to see how it is with stock all seasons and if the weather gets really bad, just take the Sorento (which we already have winter rubber for)...alternatively, perhaps replacing the stock tires with all weather tires (Michelin Cross Climate 2) so i can skip the seasonal tire changes (and the costs to do that and store them)...i suppose i could then sell my stock tires, but i'm not sure how easy those tires would be to sell since it's such a unique size.

Might be able to trade in your stock tires at a tire shop to put towards the cross climates

So storing the tires at your place and taking the 30-45 min twice a year to do the swap over isnt an option at all?? Like tires can sit very well outside under a cover in a forgotten part of your yard for the season, they don't have to be inside at 22C.
Lighten up Francis.....

it's how we do it now, but we want the space freed up in the garage for one...also, my wife has to lug the tires around as my back is shot and i can't lift them...these larger tires are quite heavy and cumbersome to keep transporting around twice a year.

Seeing as you can get a lot of snow where you are, I'd be looking for an "all weather" tire that is a bit close to a winter tire than the Cross Climates.  Nokian WR, etc.
