I'm used to more domestic offerings so $7k for one cylinder head is outrageous. Thats a pity because its a beautiful car.

Actually, $7K is a good price for that.  No shortage of owners spending $10K on making their 2.0 whole again.  But, yeah, when you consider a brand new crate LS3 is <$10K, it's pretty expensive.  (And the LS3 is pricey crate engine...)

But why would the head need a re-do with such low mileage?

Top ends are bad on those engines.  Common problem.  Pretty much all those 2.0Ts will have to have it done, and turbos are problematic too.  These were horrible new car buys and anyone that kept them out of warranty got burned up pretty bad.  But as cheap used cars with work done, they can be had for little money and have some good life left if the PO invested $$$.  This one is one of those.

So is there a cure for it, like an aftermarket solution? $7k for A head sounds ridiculous, is this just a case of FGC or is it something special.

Of course it’s special!  Head, complete valve train.... never going to be cheap. To answer AB’s question: yes, it’s cured. Problem starts with worn cam follower.  They reengineered that part.  Good as new for a couple of hundred thousand more km.  I plan only to keep it a couple of winters and at that price I just junk it if it looks too expensive to repair. Might be a pretty face but it’s way out of warranty and I know the risks!

We just got back from the hospital. He has bruises and a minor concussion. Also friction burns on his right hand from the airbag deployment and also a sore wrist. He was lucky.

I am glad your son is okay.  And hope he'll be okay later on as well.

It's the little aches here and there well after the impact that really hurts you and affects your daily life.  You don't feel much even after few days after the impact.  At least that's what happened to me in every accident I've been in.
