So incredibly lame.  Whoever is at the helm of VW corporate is not a car enthusiast.

Essentially the Germans are just trying to hang on (they are in the midst of an existential moment).  They have neither oil or electricity.  The Greens made sure that all their perfectly good nuclear reactors were closed.  Consequently, became cannon fodder for the Russians.  They have no energy to keep big chemical operating so that is shifting to NA just to pick one example.  They are burning lignite to attempt to keep the lights on.  Currently, they produce 10Xs the carbon emissions of France.

No surprise they are throwing everything they have into electric.  I'm sure no one at VW is happy about their situation.

As you might know or not  :), someone in Ottawa has promised them 15 Billion loonies for a battery plant.  That's kind of a tell as to their direction.l

I'm not that interested in it, but I wouldn't call it lame. Moreso inevitable due to upcoming regulations.

VW will probably be all-electric by the end of the decade, so they are reducing costs on the ICE side of the business.

The ID.GTi will arrive in 2027, based on the ID.2 that will be on the market in 2026 (in Europe, at least). It appears it's more Polo-sized.
