Sorry to hear about your troubles Hammy. This seems to confirm everything I've heard about 3rd party warranty companies (as in "avoid them!")

At least despite all the issues my Mercedes ML has cost me zero dollars over the past 4+ years 104,000 kms and I've always had a new MB loaner car.

Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

So how much more $$ would the real BMW ext warranty have cost?

I think it was an extra $2500 for the bmw warranty

Not a fan of turbochargers in general. Neither is the indi mechanic I have relied on for the past 25 years.

This goes back to my research back in 2011 when I bought my 328. It seemed the turbo version of the 3 series was the culprit for most of the reliability issues. If you took the 335 out of the stats the 3 series had an average to better than average repair history. Based on this I took a chance on the 328. Have decided to keep it beyond warranty without extending the warranty. This was based on the fact that it has been fine so far and we only put 8000 kms a year on it. Fingers crossed!!!!

Now with BMW using 4 cylinders as their base engines I do not think there is any avoiding a turbocharger on their engines.

With regards to beating the snot out the Elantra. I personally find it really troublesome that when a company lends you a car you would take pleasure in abusing it. Even with the encouragement of others on this forum. On one hand you would want them to treat your car with kid gloves and treat you fairly. On the other hand you want to drive the sh$t out of what they lend you. Something seems wrong with that logic to me. It seems by driving the crap out of their car and taking pleasure in it is you who is not treating them fairly.

PS: Regardless I am sorry for your troubles.

I'm not really that hard on the Elentra.... I even gave it a nice coat of paint sealant becuase it was so neglected.  I drive all cars fairly hard.

UPDATE

I just called BMW, they actually sent my broken turbo out to be rebuilt, and are expecting it back "any day now".  I can't wait to see how this all ends up!  I just hope they offer me something for the long wait and fooling around these past few months.

Glad to read that. I get teased for washing loaner cars and rentals. That is pride of ownership even if it only last for a few days.  Never went as far as applying paint sealant. Good on you.

Lesson here, if you want a FGC just lease a new one and enjoy...
I'd bet even a new one will be into the dealer for repairs....
Yeah, Lady No-san's father had a 2009 BMW 335xi and it had the faulty fuel pump, which 'went' 4 times over a 2 year lease.  Each time, he lost the car for at least a week.  Sure, cost him no additional $, but it was a headache always and rental cars were not always offered.

...even when they are, sometimes these rentals are not allowed to leave the city.  That happened to us, since we were going to take the 335xi to Tremblant for the weekend and were told that we could have a rental, but it couldn't leave the GTA.

Just doing my tour of vehicle websites, Infiniti has $5000 discount on leases at 0%, $6,000 discount on financing at 0.9% and $11,000 cash discounts on the Q60.  They must really need to put some effort into unloading the 2015's.  You can lease a Q60 Sport coupe AWD with tech package (its the only one they have here) 30 months at $370 bi-weekly.
