2024 Montreal Auto Show
« on: January 19, 2024, 08:01:19 am »
It's time!!

Heading over there this morning (Friday Jan 19th). I will be at the boot for L'Annuel de l'automobile from 10 to 2 pm, otherwise visiting the floors.

Vinfast brought the vehicles just shown at CES in Vegas, a quick logiyics move on their part, and since Tesla does not advertise, a local fan club of the brand just HAD to spread the word and organized a display of member's vehicles that includes a Cybertruck. Other goodies include the Ioniq5 N, Ranger Raptor, new Tacomas, '25 Camry etc.

:rofl2: The worst part about that brand is the owners - it is legitimately a cult.

My sister has a Plaid or whatever... her company gave it to her as a gift when she made partner. Thing's kind of neat, I drove it around a few days... but no thank you to the cult of Elon.

Toronto show is going to be a disaster again this year, The Germans, Jaguar and others aren't coming again, last years was like this as well and it was a waste of time, not doing that again this year... too bad I always look forward to going to the show, especially that next year I will be buying a new vehicle..

Any big unveilings planned for this year's show?

Only German brand here is VW, on the dealer's initative. JLR no-show either, as are Stellantis, Subaru, Honda and Mazda.

Still, good premieres from manufacturers that are here - more to follow. Spent most of the day signing books at the l'Annuel de l'automobile booth!

Add Volvo to the no-shows, including Polestar, and MINI.

My star of the show: Ioniq6. That thing is impressive in person, and the rear seat area is limo-like, with a totally flat floor. The shape reduces trunk volume, though.

Vinfast is at the other end of the spectrum - the vehicles have pretty crappy interiors, and pretty high prices.

Used car dealer of the worse kind award go to "Tesla club Quebec", for using false advertising in pricing that includes 10k$'s worth of "economies" from not using gas. Dudes, what if you're comparing with other EV's? Still, easily the most crowded booth when I was there.

Hmmm...I'd have to go with Nazi loving Elon being worse....But you're right, the cult is gross.

Random thoughts:

I don't have enough headroom in the back of an ID.4 - if I had hair, it would be in the headliner - big deception there.

Taos is the only VW left without the haptic crap, VW's classic 3 circular HVAC controls looked like old friends.

They still make the Mirage? Why?

The Envista is really good looking and people are noticing.

For Quebec!
I love it when a plan comes together.

More random thoughts:

A $231k Corvette. Think about that.

Air vents in the Equinox EV are tributes to the Bullet Bird taillights

Corolla Cross’ interior makes a Venue’s look like a Bentley’s

A classic 911 has more rear seat room than a GR86

In person, the Cybertruck looks like a cheap movie set prop with a mock interior. Except, this is a real vehicle.

Ioniq6 is limo-like in the back, tons of leg room plus flat floor. However, trunk suffers from the aero tail.

The Sentra and Forte were wallflowers, but both look like bargains in today’s market.

It will probably take weeks to find the right set of seat settings in a Navigator.

Toyota had a silver over red 2025 Camry XSE awd. Nobody noticed.

Crowds gathered around 1) EVs, 2) PHEV’s, 3) all SUVs

This right here is the reason why this industry is going to gradually squeeze all the fun ICE vehicles out of existence.  Those 3 are the least appealing sectors in automotive landscape right now, but I guess there likely aren't that many ICE vehicles to draw a big crowd there anyway, certainly not a Sentra/Forte/or Camry.

Yeah I used to like these events but not anymore.   I haven't been to one in about 5 years. Super cars...? Meh ,   New Trucks....?  meh.  Electric cars....Meh?

I'd prefer a hobbyist show I think, maybe some cool build projects form individuals.

Although the Motorcycle show is soon here in Calgary.  I might go to that one.

The only big auto show I've ever been to was in Montreal in 2014 (10 years ago!). That was a big catalyst for me getting my 2015 GTI as they had several on display, all identical to the one I ended up getting (Tornado Red Autobahn six-speed). It was a really cool experience to get up close and personal with a bunch of interesting cars.

The last big auto show I attended was also the Montreal show nearly 20 years ago. Agree that it is a really nice way to see and touch many different cars all at once. Winnipeg dealers use to put on a show that I attended a few times with my dad when I was a kid. I wish they would still do it but its likely not worth the effort for them anymore with the amount of online content these days.
