FJC...?
« on: August 13, 2015, 09:48:10 am »
5:00am, drive to the gym (Yonge/401ish area).  Park underground.
8:00am, start 'er up, get on 401, exit at Black Creek, continue onto Weston Road.
8:20-ish am, stop at a red light at Eglinton Avenue.
8:21-ish am, start from stopped position, and, WHAM (see pic).

Car continues to drive absolutely fine - makes no noises, no loss of power, etc.

Googling suggests that it's one of a few things:
1) Corroded wire for the ABS sensor
2) Loose/Dirty gas cap (unlikely - I filled with gas last night in Guelph, drove an hour back to Toronto, car sat for 5 short hours overnight (we watched the meteor shower at Guelph Lake, sans light pollution :) ), then drove to the gym and most of the way to work.  I'd have burned through ~8L of gas by then.  Filled at Shell (perhaps the culprit if the overfill sensor is clogged - as discussed in another thread, Shell's pumps don't seem to stop at the right spot  :-\)
3) Faulty ECM.

There seem to be a LOT of complaints about the 2010 Corolla in particular having this issue.  It's relatively warm outside, the car would have been warmed up by this point, and it hasn't rained in 2 days (some have suggested water got into the air intake, which makes no sense...others are just disconnecting/reconnecting the battery to make the light go away  :-\).

Thoughts, anyone?

I've never seen a CEL light on before in any car I've ever driven.  It's not a great feeling :(

VSC and traction control is gone?  Could be ABS sensor or low brake fluid.

I think ABS sensor, but brake fluid is fine.  It's weird cuz it started when I accelerated, not when I was braking.

If it's a bad wire then it could start whenever...

It's not FJC problem it's just a minor issue

Onn most Toyota models, if you active the CEL, you also get VSC/TRAC lights too.  On the Highlander I had a loose gas cap and it set off all of them.  So, it's not for sure related to the VSC system - it could be anything.

Step 1: Read the codes.

Oh, and it's not a loose gas cap issue - the system only checks for integrity when at 3/4 tank or less remaining.  You have too much fuel for the system to trip even if the cap is loose.

Could be anything...from simple to extremely costly.  Get the codes read.

First thing, pull the positive wire off for 5-10 minutes too see if that clears it, sometimes ECMs have blonde moments. If not, yeah, get the codes read, I don't know how Toyota works, but to me if it involves the traction/stability nannies, its usually an ABS sensor.
Lighten up Francis.....

ECP, yo!  ;D

Problem is timing to bring it in :(

Are you sure about this?  I'm interested to see if that is, indeed, true.

If I disconnect the battery, I'd want the dealership to make sure everything else resets.  Sounds like I should bring it in any way since it'd be covered under ECP.

Everything does reset and it will save you a trip to the dealer if it was just a momentary hiccup.

I'd rather the dealer do that.

First, restore possession of the vehicle to its owner.

Second, buy your own car.
Seriously?

First, I commute with my father daily.  Second, I'm taking care of an issue with his car - I'd say that's pretty fair of me to do.

If you taking care of it then just take to a shop instead of whining here

Way ahead of you.  Appointment set for 2:30pm.

Just thought I would save you the hassle.
Appreciated.  I'd like to be more DIY, but I'm not particularly there yet.  I'll learn some day - I'm good with some things, but when it's too involved (mechanicals, mostly), I tend to leave it to those who are better trained/experienced.

That, I could do...but not while at work.  The dealership is on the way home.  This way I get to work from home later :)
