It is kind of funny. I had an Escort wagon  :P before the Yaris and the size comparison is interesting. The two are exactly the same width (66.7"), the Yaris is 6.4" taller, but 21.3" shorter (less long?).

Well that IS  the greatest difference. The F*** had no quality, while the Yaris seems to have excellent quality. As the discussion was about size, I didn't think it appropriate to bring up, but thank you for the excuse to do so.  :-* ;D

Scudworm, I have one more question for you.  Did you pay for the whole car in cash?  Or did you purchase finance the car?  I used your method and IT WORKS great so far!  Thank you so much for the tip.

To ALL:
Some dealers wouldn't budge because of Access Toyota and blah blah blah...  Here are the discounts I'm being offered, $100 off, $225, $330, and $600, quite the differences!  (I sent the e-mail to all dealers in Alberta.  I'm still a student so all discounts count.)  I plan to pay $15,000 in down payment, and purchase finance for the rest; do you think they'll still give me the same discounts?  I haven't let them know yet that I plan to purchase finance the car.  Do you think they'll give me a hard time?  My FICO score was 75X something this time of last year, and I haven't checked again since-it costs money to do so; it should be higher now.  I don't intend to pay for the whole car in cash, cause I've got to save (quite) some for the car insurance, the maintenance, trips, the tuition fees, unexpected emergencies, et cetera.

Lastly, I'm still deciding between the Bayou Blue and Blazing Blue-I really like both.  The Blazing Blue seems to suit a younger person like me better.  But, it seems so many people on these forum have gotten the Blazing ones, so now I'm leaning toward the Bayou-just to be different.  Any thoughts?  I'm so excited about getting my first new car! ;D

Thanks in advance,

Does scudworm live back east?  I would be surprised to see anyone getting $1000 off a Yaris on the 'Wet' coast.

I'm doing the exact same thing you are doing. Putting down the cost of half of the car and financing the rest.

I plan to pay $15,000 in down payment, and purchase finance for the rest; do you think they'll still give me the same discounts?  I haven't let them know yet that I plan to purchase finance the car.  Do you think they'll give me a hard time?

I don't think there will be any problems. I had none whats so ever. Since you have negotiated the final price of the car, that figure is set in stone. When signing the papers, you have a choice to pay cash or finance or both. The only area that would be a problem is if your credit line is not up to par and offer you a higher finance rate than advertised.

I'm so excited about getting my first new car! ;D

I'm excited about getting my first new car too.

I live in Toronto. Bought the car near Canada's Wonderland. Insurance is higher here in the city. People who live in cottage country (1 hour north of the city) has cheaper insurance.

What a lot of folks forget is that the dealer has a large "padded" amount in the PDI.  It costs about $400 to ship the car, so they have $600 to play with right there.

. Thanks for helping us out in the one tonne challenge.

I love that orange Yaris you shot, Rob. The bright blue is great too.

Access Toyota is in other provinces, and in those areas Toyota pricing is set and largely non-negotiable (similar to Saturn, although they can evaluate your trade higher, and sneak in discounting, etc)

Excellent post format and explanation. The invoice on the cars is the same no matter how much they purchase. Maple Toyota is a new dealership, wants positive word of mouth (as you're giving here), and the service work to get all their departments profitable.

I think the Fit FEELS like a roomier and more versatile vehicle, so I'm really looking FW to it. The Yaris is a great vehicle in itself but almost too traditional in format now, as odd as that sounds.

Thanks again Scudworm,
 :)

BTW, did anybody here get her/his Yaris w/ a hood deflector?  I'm considering it.  Do you think the Yaris hood deflector will be really helpful/useful?  I'm thinking of getting it to protect (soon to be) my new Yaris from paint chips.
Thanks in advance,

Thanks in advance,

The only truly reliable way to prevent stone chips and bugs gunking up on the hood is to either use a bra (and remember to take it on and off when washing your car, etc.) or those new-fangled custom made sticky-clear coating kits (can't remember what the doggone things are called - but they are all over the net) that are applied to various susceptable areas of chipping on a car.

I almost had a deflector installed on our new Sonata, but changed my mind at the last minute as the Hyundai product was a permanent thing and I didn't want screw holes in the hood.

Thanks for the info, jww.

I've finally put down a deposit on the Blazing Blue Yaris RS.  The discount I get is $800 from HighRiver Toyota, High River.  It seems that dealers in Alberta cities (Edmonton & Calgary) aren't willing to give out discount as much as dealers from smaller towns do.  (Few wouldn't even budge at all; some were giving like only ~$100/$200 off.)  >:(  At first, I was reluctant b/w bayou blue & blazing blue.  However, the dealer told me that it'd take much longer if I decided to go w/ the bayou.  My blazing blue Yaris is coming soon; they expect to receive it w/in this month.

I'm so excited.   ;D

Quick question from a new car, er, newbie:

Does heating in the Yaris - or most cars, really - rely on having bought the AC option, or is it there with the base model and passive (i.e. just venting engine bay heat)?  I'm guessing the latter given that "rear seat heater ducts" (Toyota's words) are standard on all models, but I'd like to know that people in the front of the car are being warmed up as well. :P

If heating is there as a matter of course, I'd be happy.  I'm considering a Yaris and, being a recent graduate without a great income, I'd rather not spend $1440 for the relatively short part of the year in which opening a window won't solve all my cooling problems.

Heating IS standard on all cars sold in North America. It is only the cooling that is optional. A/C does provide one additional advantage, namely it helps reduce humidity in the car. I actually use A/C more in the winter here on the Wet Coast than I do in the summer. Enjoy the savings.  ;D

If you are in a large city  and in traffic A/C is a blessing. Driving at highway speed for a couple of hours with the windows open can also give you a headache.
Also you will probably get yoour money back on the A/C when you sell the car
With my truck I can open the sunroof and there is very little noise.
With the 323CIC I can drop the roof and with the widows up and windscreen up very little wind comes in. And still need to turn the A/C on to kept cool on a hot sunny day with the top down

That seems so strange to me...having the top down and the air on, but I'm sure it helps (especially in stop-and-go traffic).  I have air in the monster, but seldom use it.  I may try using the air with the top down next summer, as the V8 puts A LOT of heat into the cabin (wanted or not).
