Help!!! I need advice on a water problem
« on: September 29, 2017, 04:00:22 pm »
I live in a part of our city that recently switched municipal water supplies from a lake to a well.  I’m assuming that the well water has a lot more minerals in it and isn't ‘softened’ at the source.  Today, for the first time since the water supply was switched, I washed my car.  My usual process was to wash it with a mitt, keep it wet as I went along and once I was done dry it with a microfiber towel.  I had no issues with water spots.

Today, however, was significantly different.  Even as I was washing the car there were obvious signs of spots forming.  I kept it wet and once I was done washing it I dried it.  It looks terrible.  I should add that the car is black so the issue is exacerbated.  I dried the windows too and I’m not sure that the car would be safe to drive after dark they have so much crud on them.  I used the windshield washer when I drove the car and that took a layer off but the spots are still noticeable there.  Where the left wiper comes up parallel to the left A-pillar there is a line of what I suspect are minerals from the water.

I don’t want to put a water softener in just for washing my car.  I’m anal about it, but I think my wife would have me committed if I did that.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

My thought is that I could wash it as usual and then before I dry it take a microfiber towel soaked in distilled water and rub the whole car down, rinsing the towel often and see if that solves the problem.

Any thoughts?

Start by asking the city about the hardness of the water and the mineral content.     It may be that you will indeed want a softener for clothes washing and to preserve the internals of washing machines etc.
Our Guelph water is from wells and very hard, about 23 grains and life without a softener is difficult.
I installed a soft water line specifically to wash my car , a dark green BMW at the time. Nowadays I just leave the car out in the rain and go to the car wash!

Negative.....you don't want a water softener. It doesn't reduce the TDS (PPM). Your water is probably in the 400 PPM range....city water in Ottawa is 75-85 PPM.

You have a few options:

1. ONR (rinseless wash)
2. Mixed Bed Deionizer
3. Dual bed (cation and anion) Deionizer.

Anyway, get a TDS meter off Ebay.

^^ But surely this is why you call the city.  To find out what is in the water. It is their job to know what they are supplying.   If it is only Calcium compounds then a conventional softener will do the job.   If it has other compounds and iron...well  a friend of mine ended up with a whole house osmosis machine to get clean water!

West side Saint John.

The city did say that there would be a few weeks of water that might have particulate in it, or more chlorine than normal.

Just wash it again.  Go east.

I have the same issues with washing the cars at home as we are on a well. These seem like a great idea but I'm guessing they would do your paint any favours?

My water softener here does the whole house fine for normal use but cannot soften fast enough for a hose for car washing. I gave up, and use the touchless carwash now.

Buy a testing kit from anywhere and see how many grains you actually have and then take it from there.  $10.  You really need to know your number of grains before you can make any moves.

Right!    Guelph is deemed very hard at between 23 and 25 grains. The water comes from several wells driven down to an aquifer.
Guelph water leaves white spots on anything.

It sure does.
Which is why when I wash either car in my driveway I use Optimum No Rinse in a bucket of distilled water.

Why not put a water softener? Those minerals aren't good for your hot water tank, especially if it's electric.

We do have one, which has to work hard with our water.
Our outside taps bypass that softener

I wonder if a trip to the wand wash to get the heavy dirt off (without using the brush) followed by a wipe down later with those wash wipes or some other waterless product would be a solution?

^ that's what I do.
If really dirty will take it through a no touch wash then hit it with bucket wash in driveway.   Only do that in winter -- the Optimum No Rinse stuff works fine on moderately dirty cars.

I do have a separate tap with soft water but as I said above, our softener and I bet many others cannot keep up with a hose.

Retested Guelph water in our area, that is Old University Weels.  Came out at 32 grains.  Adjusted the water softener.
