What is the max load rating for wheels on CX-5?
« on: July 31, 2023, 08:57:48 pm »
OK in my search for 17 alloys for my 2023 Mazda CX-5, I ended up ordering these 17 by 7 RSSW Mayfair wheels from Crappy Tire.

https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/rssw-mayfair-alloy-wheel-rim-hyper-silver-1411070p.1417048.html?loc=plp

Many sites show this as perfect for the CX-5. Correct bolt pattern, offset of 45 and Center bore of 67.1. They are also winter approved. And the price was right.

They have a max load rating of 1521 lbs. How do I know if this is enough for the CX-5?
If you want more in life you have to make an effort.

I found this explanation online

Max Load Rating - This is the maximum load that a wheel is designed to carry. This load is calculated from calculating 50% of the GAWR (gross axle weight rating). If, for example, the GAWR of your vehicle is 2200lbs, you would need a minimum load rating of 1100lbs per wheel.

I then found these specs for the CX-5

U.S.A. and Canada SKYACTIV-G 2.5 Item Weight

AWD

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) 2,143 kg (4,724 lbs)

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating)
   Front 1,100 kg (2,425 lbs)
        Rear 1,043 kg (2,299 lbs)

So if I take the GAWR of front axle and divide by 2 it is just over 1200lbs. That should mean my new wheels with rating of 1521 should be fine. I think.

To verify what you got on line, there ought to be a sticker on the vehicle that has the GAWR's - usually located on the driver's doorframe.

You were correct sir. It is right on the sticker in the door frame. GAWR 2425 front and 2299 rear. So the wheels I selected will be fine.

Ahhhh to be 20 again.  I was fearless and ignorant of such things. Did not have internet with so much info to deal with and get anal about. I would have slapped what ever wheels I could fasten to the car and drove 100 miles an hour (probably on bald tires). Max loads and offsets were not even on the radar back then. I am surprised I lived through it all. I had fun though.

Reminds me of an interview with an old submariner (from WW2 I think). Their submarine had trouble and went straight to the bottom, well beyond the theoretical crush depth. They (eventually) got things fixed and came back up.

The interviewer asked him 'Were you scared?'

He said 'No, not really. The crew was barely over 20 at the time and we didn't think we could die'

'The officers in their 30's though, they looked scared as hell'

I have certainly never considered load ratings on wheels - didn't even know it was a thing until a couple of short weeks ago, and BluePrint's adventures...

As cars and trucks keep getting fatter and fatter, it could become a bigger thing going forward.

Bingo.

Talked to PMC tire this morning, my forum discussions elsewhere are stirring up demand and they are grabbing all the Mazda-spec wheels they can find at their suppliers.

The CX-90 PHEV has a GVWR of 6854 lbs, but rear GAWR is 4,090 libs, meaning wheels with a load capacity of 2,045 lbs.

Mazda's own spec, at 1984 lbs, fails to meet this  ???

The 19" RWC MHK369 offers 2,039 lbs, near perfect and that's what I will be getting in the end.

If you have seen the poor grain structure in a poorly constructed aluminum wheel you would pay attention.

It's going to be fun for CX-90 owners who did not plan ahead. Tirerack has zero - 0 - wheels in stock that fit the CX-90. I just checked them for the viewing app on vehicle, but they don't have photos of the CX-90 either!

The RWC MHK369 popped up a lot on forum discussions, so it's now b/o everywhere.

I finally went with the RWC MHK336, 2,035 lbs rated, one of three wheels that meet the Mazda spec at PMC Tire:
