I hate these things on any car.... But can't get a premium car without it...or at least not too many. What's wrong with closing the hatch manually? Normal struts, $20-$30 and 10 min to replace.

Well, first major (potentially expensive) failure on the CX-5.  The power liftgate is malfunctioning.  Press the button to open it, it lifts about a foot, stops, then goes down a few inches and stops again.  Doesn't work at all after that.  I googled the symptoms, and tried all sorts of 'reset' functions.  From what I can tell, it could be the lift motors (about $750ea, and there's two of them), or the sensors, or the control module.  Either way, all beyond my capability to properly diagnose.  Booked in with the mechanic in two weeks, and I'm not looking forward to the bill.

5 years old now, with 68 000 kms.
Wonder if it thinks there's an obstruction or something?
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

The Automotive aftermarket started salivating the moment those motorized lift supports came out, and honestly, I haven't seen a ton of sales on them, but it sounds like these CX-5s might change that.

That's how it's acting, which to me means the obstruction sensor is acting up, or perhaps the controller.  BUT, I watched a couple of YouTube videos, and they all pointed towards the lift motors failing.

I dunno, I'll let the mechanic figure it out.  Apparently there are some codes that get stored, but they're pretty deep in there, and you need a fairly advanced OBDII reader (like, Pro level) to get to them.

Wouldn't surprise me either.

Motor was failing on that S8 I had. Would not open on its own.

But if you used a fingers worth of pressure to help, it would open.

In other words...it didn't take much to prevent itself from opening.

Keep us posted.

Any thoughts on the Lexus SC430 as a weekend summer cruiser? Not for me.  ;D

Washed em all... :censor: me was that a bad idea! Exhausting as well   The damn Passport is a lotta work, have to use a ladder to do the roof. SLK is easier, hardest part is its low to the ground, so doing the sills is a lotta squating down. The Mazda3 is a lot freaking taller than it looks, my V70 had a lower roofline.

We LOVED our SC430.

You can't believe how quiet the car is with the top down.

Was a nice car for sure!

Thats a beautiful spec. Was it a US import? They are quite hard to find locally - either too old, high km, or abused/sketch sellers.

High mileage doesn't scare me on these, personally. Engine is good for 500k. Other bits are shared with other Lexus. Easy to maintain.

But yes, abused and poorly maintained would be problematic....As is the case with any car.

Got this car from BC.

And yes...they can be scarce, period.

I'd still like a Pebble Beach edition in Tiger Eye Mica

I don't know. They check a lot of boxes and I should like them but there is just something about them I find unappealing. Maybe the softness? I much prefer something like Gurgie's ride

Doesn't help that they're quite ugly, IMO.

Maybe that's it. Reminds me of an overweight snowbird in Florida... ;D

Ya, it's a full on luxury car and not the least bit sporty.

But if luxury and comfort are priorities, it does it extremely well.

Yeah a cruiser would be ok. Why did you get rid of yours?

Because I'm not wealthy, so if I want to try something else one car has to go. We're each "allowed" one commuter and one "weekend/fun" car.

SC was replaced with Boxster RS60.

Not today, but on Wednesday I finally got around to swapping the summer wheels on the BMW. While I was at it I replaced the front rotors. Had a caliper seize last year and rotor was warped after.

It had been many, many years since I did a brake job myself. I think the last time was on my 1998 Protege back in 2005 or thereabouts. It's quite simple on the BMW. Only trouble I ran into was the 6mm Allen bolt that holds the rotor on the hub was stripped on the driver's side but I managed to get it off by jamming a Torx socket in it. Of course I reused the same bolt since I didn't have another one.  ;D

What did you do for the seized front caliper? For some reason, new OE (Ate) calipers are only available for rear. Did you use rebuild/reman?

I like the SC430 because it's pretty unique in the market....as Ron said, not-sporty at all, but focused luxury with the retractable hardtop. Really nice driving cars, if you like a soft quite ride and don't expect a sports car. I agree that they look a little bloaty and awkward though.

Seems there are two options on the market; either dirt cheap and totally clapped out high mileage units, or very well kept 'weekend driver' type examples that are still commanding pretty good money.

A neighbor of my parents had an SC4320 and an 07 Jag XK, when the owner died the widow was looking to get rid of both of them. I did buy the XK, fixed up a few needs, and sent it on. Had intention to buy the SC430, and had aligned on a price, but she ran into issues getting the ownership from the estate and the deal sorta fell off. I think her daughter ended up driving it for awhile, not sure what eventually happened to it. It needed brakes pretty bad and the undercarriage was getting a little crusty.

I dunno, took it to my mechanic and he took care of it.  :)
