Great article! The last paragraph had me smiling and nodding and dreaming of one day owning simple toy car.

You mentioned the abysmal fuel economy of the Lexus, what was it towing vs not towing?

If I had to guess, he was getting 21-22L/100km while towing.  and 13L/100km while unladen.

But I"m just guessing.

It requires its driver to be an active participant thanks to skinny econo-box tires and a rear-biased weight distribution that can result in surprising oversteer. There’s no ABS, no stability control,

You going to drive it in the wintertime? My old 510 had a tendency to swap ends unpredictably on ice and snow, and that can be more thrill than you want sometimes

No, it'll definitely be tucked in for the winter.  It's managed to avoid winter for 37 years, no sense subjecting it to one now!

The unladen guess is pretty well spot-on.  Towing it was around 18, which, I suppose in the grand scheme of hauling a big, heavy steel trailer plus a whole other car, isn't the end of the world.  But dammit... premium fuel is pricy and for some reason, Lexus recommends it.

That's a pretty common Lexus vs Toyota thing. Same engine, different fuel reccs.

Whenever I looked into it Lexus owners with V8's or V6's run either without issue, pretty sure it's usually 'recommended' not 'required'

Believe the RX450h is 'required' but think that either had to do with slightly less emissions or slightly higher advertised mileage

Agreed that 18L/100km doesn't seem that bad, its only 9L/100km per vehicle  ;) (or 6L/100km if you count the trailer as a vehicle as well)

That was the speed of our minivan convoy when I joined them for a comparo back in 2004. They treat the throttle like an off-on switch  ;D

I like that reasoning!  ;D
