Way too much plastic.

No way I would feel confident towing 3000 lbs with it.

I would stick with the regular Crosstrek.

Ahh, but that 3500lb tow rating means that you could feel pretty confident towing 1500lbs with it.  A lot of those teardrop trailers / adventure trailers weigh about 1500lbs, and that seems to be the intention here.

With a 185HP backed by a CVT. What could go wrong?  ;D  Tail wagging the dog and a rolling roadblock on any incline.

With a massive "TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT" message flashing in your face, CVT  :hurl: :hurl:
Lighten up Francis.....

With the added oil cooler, it probably has quite a safety margin for Subaru to certify the car for 3,500 lbs

Is it? More likely someone will hook a 3500lb uhaul on it... Do these adventure trailers require a class 3 hitch? That would look quite large on a Crosstrek.

I’m going to put a Class 3 hitch on the Crosstrek this spring. Not planning on towing anything, just want it for the 2” receiver for a bike rack.

You can buy ones that tuck under the bumper nicely.

I like it.  I like it a lot.

Weird that it doesn't come with a front camera though.

Crosstek has around a 500kg payload.

A receiver and drawbar/ball is probably 25kg.
4x  75kg people: 300 kg
1 large dog  ;D or cargo 40kg

That gives 135kgs to work with. So max 297lbs tongue weight.

Something has to give. Either passengers, cargo or you are not pulling 3500 lbs with a 10% tongue weight. I didn't even include the standard roof box.

Many vehicles face this dilemma though.

If that isn't the ugliest car on the market today, it sure is close.

How far will the faux off-road trend go? We must be getting near the peak(I hope).

Compared to most "faux" off-road vehicles this Crossie has decent chops.  Is it anywhere as capable as a Wrangler or Bronco, heck no, but it'll hand with a Grand Cherokee, and beat most CUV's in the rough stuff.

As far as the whole styling exercise, I don't personally like it, but seems to be a trend currently and people are buying them.  So there is a market for it I guess.

You assume people do this kind of math.  I guarantee you that majority of people will just look at the weight of whatever they plan to tow and as long as it's 3,500lbs or less, they'll assume they are fine.  They might be fine if they are towing on flat land and not at 100+kms/hr, but I still would be doing a similar math as what you did above before I would attempt to tow anything with a CVT.

The side cladding is a bit much indeed...

Yup, the Crosstrek is known for its off-road chops, and the hardware added to the Wilderness goes along the way of how many owners mod their cars.

I don't hate it, actually.  Maybe I'm de-sensitized because I've looked at the cladding on our Outback for almost 9 years.

At least this thing isn't all hat, no cattle.  I'd drive one.  Would prefer a real transmission rather than a CVT, but that's old man screams at clouds at this point.

Many vehicles face this dilemma though.

EVERY vehicle with a tow rating has this dilemma.  pickup trucks included.  Max tow rating on any half ton truck is with a driver, a single passenger, and zero cargo in the vehicle.

And, if you're going camping with 4 people and a large dog, with a roofbox, pulling a trailer, with a crosstrek, you bought the wrong vehicle.

Look at the intention here:  This is ideally for a couple, either young or old, who want to do a bit of adventuring or touring.  That 3500lb tow rating isn't for pulling a single axle travel trailer that weighs 3499lbs dry, it's for pulling the 1200lb pop-up, or 1000lb teardrop trailer without any issues at all.

I call out half ton drivers all the time.  No way anybody with a half ton should be maxing out their tow rating on the regular when pulling a travel trailer.  A 34' 12000lb travel trailer is NOT half ton towable, even though an F150 may have a 13 100lb tow rating.

I don't think I've ever seen a modded Crosstrek.

Cladding seems a bit much for me, but I saw an Outback Wilderness in that same colour all cladded up in a parking lot yesterday. Changes the stock persona quite a bit, makes it look more like a Jeep type thing. Actually quite good in person

Not common around here, in fact you rarely see anything but their WRX/STI/BRZ's modded around here.  But there are people who do some decent off roading with these and their other CUVs.

Curiously, modded or just raised Crosstreks and Outbacks are a common sight in my area. The Subarus often have mud on them. Modded Wranglers are typically buffed to a high shine and stored for winter.
